Polenta is a known Italian corn meal mush liked by children and adults, alike. It looks similar to porridge and is something that you can make without spending too much money on the ingredients. It can be flavoured with cheeses and seasonings, used as a base for a variety of toppings, or formed into balls or patties, and fried. Here is how you can make polenta from scratch.
Ingredients
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Coarse cornmeal - 1 cup
  • Salt - As per your taste preference
  • Butter - 4 tablespoons
Instructions
  1. Take a medium saucepan and pour three cups of water in it, before placing it over high heat. Bring it to boil.
  2. Now you can mix cornmeal into one cup of water and create a mixture.
  3. Add this mixture to the boiling water and keep on whisking, until it returns to a boil.
  4. When the mixture starts boiling, you should reduce the heat and cook the cornmeal on low heat for about 40 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent both sticking and lumps from forming.
  5. If the cornmeal gets too thick, add a little bit more water, just a couple of tablespoons at a time and continue the heating process till the desired consistency is achieved.
  6. When the cornmeal is smooth and creamy, remove it from the heat and add 4 tablespoons of butter and salt to taste. Keep in mind that if you have salted butter, salt may not be necessary.
  7. You can taste polenta after adding salted butter to it.
  8. Check if it tastes well, or you can consider adding some salt to bring in the desired flavour.
