How to Make Free Ringtones for the IPhone

To be able to get custom ringtones on an iPhone is something that a lot of users of the great Apple product cherish. There is nothing like letting a clip from your favourite song inform you that you are getting a call. It can also make you the centre of attention, with people unable to keep themselves from taking notice of your ringtone and coming over to you if they liked what they heard.

One of the best things about custom ringtones for the iPhone is that you can make them for free.

Instructions

  • 1

The first thing that you need to do is to open iTunes on your computer. The icon for the programme will typically be located on the desktop. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.

  • 2

Next, decide the song that you want to use to make a custom ringtone for your iPhone. Play it through iTunes and listen through the song and select the portion of the song which you want as your ringtone. In most cases, chorus may prove to be the best part to select for the purpose.

  • 3

When you have decided on the part of the song that you want to make into a ringtone, note down the start and end time of that part.

  • 4

Once you have noted the start and end time of the clip, right-click on the song and then select “Get Info” from the context menu.

  • 5

In the “Get Info” window, locate and click the “Options” tab.

  • 6

In the field right next to “Start Time,” enter the start time of the song of your choice that you noted down in the third step. Keep the time in the minutes:seconds format such as 1:34.

  • 7

In the field right next to “Stop Time,” put in the end time of the portion of the song that you selected for your ringtone. You also noted down this time in the third step. Keep the format of the time to minutes:seconds as well.

  • 8

After you have entered the start and end time of the clip, click “OK.”

  • 9

Now locate the song again from iTunes and right-click it to bring up a context menu. Select “Covert Selection to AAC” from the menu. Wait for a few seconds as iTunes converts your song. Do not worry about your original song file being replaced as iTunes will create a duplicate version instead of replacing the original one.

  • 10

Right-click on the ringtone and then select “Delete” from the context menu. Click on the “Keep Files” button.

  • 11

Locate the converted file. You will most likely find it in the “User” folder right under “Music> iTunes> iTunes Music.” The file will be under the band’s name.

  • 12

Change the m4a extension of the ringtone to m4r by simply right-clicking the file and replacing m4a by m4r.  Press “Enter” and then click “Use .m4r” when the computer alerts you that the change may affect the use of file.

  • 13

iTunes will automatically add the ringtone to the ringtone folder in your iTunes Music Library once you double-click it.

  • 14

Complete the process by connecting your iPhone to the computer and syncing ringtones.
