Hula Hoop Bed Curtains

If you’re wondering what to do with that old hula hoop, think no more. There’s a fun and easy project you can do with the hoops, if you have a sewing machine. Bed curtains beautify a child’s room and they’re not just for little girls. Make boys bed curtains out of boy prints like Scooby Doo or Spiderman.

To make the curtains you’ll need to know the measurement of the bed, around the perimeter. Double that measurement to allow the curtains to be full. Now measure from the ceiling to a couple of inches above the floor. This measurement will serve to cut each panel length. Since the fabric will be 36″, 45″ or 60″ wide, each panel will be that wide as well.

Cut enough panels, depending upon the width of the cloth, to equal the measurement of the doubled perimeter measurement. Cut them to the length of your ceiling to floor measurement. Sew each panel together, if you want, or just butt them together when you sew the onto the hoop.

Before stitching the curtains to the hoop, hem across all the bottoms and hem them on the sides, unless you’ll be stitching them all together. After everything is hemmed it’s time to sew them to the hula hoop.

Wrap the top edge of one curtain panel over the hula hoop and sew the top edge to the part just below the hoop. As you stitch, tuck the raw edge under about a quarter of an inch to eliminate the raw edge.

It’s a little difficult to maneuver the hula hoop while you’re sewing. Try to keep it upright with one hand and use the other to manipulate the cloth, or get someone to guide the hula hoop while you stitch.

As you come to the end of the first panel simply grab the next one, wrap the top edge around the hoop, and continue sewing. Or, if you’ve already stitched all the panels together, just continue sewing the curtain to the hoop.

When you come to the end of the panels leave an opening between the first and last panel to serve as a doorway into the bed. Scrunch the curtains around on the hoop until the fabric is evenly proportioned on the hoop. No need to leave a large gap as the doorway, just position the slit on the side of the bed which will be used as the entryway. The user just needs to part the curtains, then, as they get into bed.

Use “C” hooks to screw to the ceiling for hanging the hoop. Use wire to hang from the “C” hooks to the hoop. Position the hoop a few inches from the ceiling and make sure the wires are equal lengths to ensure the hoop hangs evenly. The wires can be just looped between the hooks and the hula hoop.

Your child will love the new hula hoop bed curtain and you’ll be proud of the work. The finished project is very impressive-looking for little time and effort.
