Your Guide to a Hassle-Free Cruise

It’s easy to imagine yourself on the deck of a cruise ship, fruity drink in hand, waving the shoreline and real life behind. What you don’t want to think about is any preventable circumstances putting a damper on your dream vacation. The following tips can help ensure you have a fantastic voyage.

Prior to booking your cruise, carefully study the ships plans before choosing a stateroom. This information is available on the cruise line’s website or brochure. The most important thing to be aware of is what is surrounding your cabin on the floors above and below. You do not want to settle into that cozy bed only to realize that your room is directly over the 24-hour disco dance club or rowdy sports bar. It is also a good idea to stay as far as possible from the elevators, since you will definitely hear ‘people traffic’.

Now that you have booked your disco-free stateroom, it is time to pack some essentials. Don’t leave home without sunscreen, batteries, film, basic medicines and first aid, (aspirin, tums, band-aids, etc.) toiletries and sandals for the pool. These types of items are unbelievably overpriced on board and in port towns. Try $11.00 for a bottle of bug repellent. Yes, I paid this, but only once. Also bring plenty of traveler’s checks, which can be cashed at the purser’s desk on the ship. This will save on the horrendous ATM fees, another huge waste of money.

Once onboard, you will want to inquire about the shore excursions offered in your ports of call. Although they can be a bit pricey, shore excursions are a memorable and safe way to explore local sites. There is something for everyone, from historic guided tours, to horseback riding, to scuba diving. Space is always limited, though, so be prepared to sign up as soon as possible.

Finally, perhaps the most important tip to take with you: Don’t drink the water. Or be tempted to sample local cuisine. I know of a man with a self-proclaimed ‘Iron Stomach’ who tried a delicious goat’s milk soup from a street vendor in Mexico. Mr. Iron Stomach spent the remainder of his vacation crawling from his bed to the bathroom while the rest of his family swam, went sightseeing, and enjoyed the midnight chocolate buffet. Stick to the ship’s food and drink. Period.

While there is no guarantee that any vacation will be perfect, following these tips can help to ensure your cruise is an enjoyable and memorable one. So grab that fruity drink and slather on the sunscreen (that you brought with you!)…Ahoy!
