5 Creative Ways to Decorate a Kid’s Room

On a budget? Need a change? Want your kid’s room to look its best by involving everyone in the fun? Then here are 5 creative ways to decorate your kid’s room-with their help!

1. Start with the bed-the sheets, that is. Whether old or new, supply your young one with the right sized sheets and pillow cases to paint. This will be their work of art for sweet dreams in the nights to come. Whether a nighttime theme, a sentimental collage or a fun-in-the-sun mural, this project will be a hit.

What you will need: T-shirt paint, brushes, sheets and pillow cases, a painter’s cloth or other protective covering when working indoors.

2. 3-dimensional walls add so much more to a room than just plain old paint! Start by sketching a scene on paper or right onto the wall. A simple suggestions is to do a summer theme with cotton for clouds, material or construction paper for trees, textured paint for grass and felt pieces for a sun. Glue or attach with paint. You may want to paint a sky blue wall to begin with. Adding texture encourages play and will stand out as the most dramatic piece in the room.

What you will need: paint, brushes, creative craft supplies you can attach to a wall.

3. Stencil around windows and door frames. Find a pattern and a paint color or two and start stenciling. It’s that simple. An adult may want to complete the top and upper sides of the frames for safety. But your child can certainly take care of the rest!

What you will need: stencils (homemade or purchased), paint and brushes, a ladder for the adults.

4. Get creative with curtains. Use either already made curtains or shades to paint or add texture to, or make your own out of sheets or other cloth materials. Other more creative ideas include stringing pop tops together (a lot of them!) and hanging them from the top of a curtain rod. It will take several strings or layers to cover the window. Beads work for the same result with choices in color, shape and size.

What you will need: curtains or shades, craft materials, string for hanging craft materials, patience.

5. Personalize a toy chest. Use your own hammer and nails, or simply use a plastic box. Give your kid paint and art supplies and let him or her create a masterpiece where toys will be a joy to put away. Display your child’s name on the top. Are flowers a favorite? Trains or trucks? Stencils work well on this project, too.

What you will need: toy chest container, paint, brushes, art supplies, stencils, painter’s cloth or other protective covering.

Enjoy the summer months or the winter indoors by giving your child’s room of lift of its own. The ways to decorate can be endless-especially when your kids get involved in the fun!
