Staying busy and active is important for anyone’s health; however, it is extremely important for seniors. Most cities and counties across America have special groups or agencies that provide support, activities, and volunteer work for seniors. If you live in or around Tompkins County in New York, there are lots of activities that seniors can participate in for little or no cost.

Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca is located at 101 Harris B. Dates Drive in Ithaca and this hospital is always looking for new volunteers. Cayuga Medical Center offers flexible volunteering hours and they need help in just about every department. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, also known as RSVP, is a volunteer program that has an office out of Ithaca. This program is sponsored by the Senior Citizen’s Council and is a national recognized program. This volunteer program helps seniors over the age of 55 put their skills and experience to work. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program works with a large number of non-profit organizations to provide services. Volunteer opportunities for this program exist as office assistants, library aids, mentors, tutors, and there are more positions available. The Foodnet Program of Tompkins County is a non-profit group that works with the Tompkins County Office for the Ageing. This program is also referred to as the Congregate Meal Program. This program provides social time and meals Monday through Friday for anyone over 60 years old. There are four dining locations located in Ithaca, Groton, Trumansburg, and Lansing. Donations for meals are suggested and you may donate with your food stamps if needed.

The Golden Age Club is a program that offers seniors many opportunities. Membership for the Golden Age is only five dollars a year. This program offers a weekly exercise class and dance classes. The Senior Theatre Troupe is run by the Tompkins County Senior Citizen’s Council. This program offers seniors an opportunity to tell stories, interact with others, and have fun! The theatre is a simple one with no sets, props or any lights; however, plays are developed as you go along. This program generally meets every Thursday from 1:15 to 2:25 in the afternoon. The Bridge Club of America has a location in Ithaca, New York. This club offers members a chance to play and learn bridge. Games are generally held about four times a week. Membership for this club is fifteen dollars once a year. The Bridge Club of America also offers lessons for beginners interested in learning.
