Best Senior Housing in the Downtown Seattle Area

Due to the amount of aging baby boomers nationwide, real estate analysts have stated that senior retirement communities are the housing wave of the future. The future is now. The Seattle area, alone, has had a tremendous growth in this area just within the last couple of years. I have come in contact with some very impressive facilities recently. Here is a partial list I have compiled of the best places for senior housing in the Seattle area:

Located within the First Hill area, near Virginia Mason Hospital, is a senior housing center known as Exeter House. The architecture here is simply exquisite. It is very comforting and pleasant to walk inside this place. Originally built in the 1920’s as a grand hotel, this building was recently renovated to its original decorum. Step inside the front door and you will be greeted with a grand foyer of varnished wood and patterned carpet. The decorum reminded me of throwback to times before plastics and stucco.

Exeter House is owned and operated by the PRCN (Presbyterian Retirement Communities Northwest). This senior housing center offers 82 apartments, 24 assisted living rooms, and also has some rooms available in its health care area.

There are a variety of amenities offered at this community, but I particularly like the 24-hour fitness center that operates here. Amongst other classes offered here, residents can enjoy a yoga and/or tai chi class. There are scheduled daily walks, also.

Parking is tricky here, though. The only parking available is via valet underneath their facility. Access is easy off of I-5, though.
Residents can use the public transportation, though. This is easily accessible around Exeter House.

Contact Exeter House at 206-622-1300. Their physical address is: 720 Seneca St., Seattle, WA. 98101.

Another one of the best senior housing communities available in the Seattle area is that of Nikkei Manor. Located in Seattle’s International District, this assisted living facility has a strong sense of community for Japanese Americans. It is located walking distance from many shops, events, and restaurants. There is public transportation available to residents, also.

Nikkei Manor offers 50 apartments ranging from studios to one-bedrooms. They offer both American and Japanese meals. The atmosphere is very pleasant with hallway walls being filled with hand-painted drawings by residents. There also are a variety of services available to assist residents with personal chores. I have known the staff to be very friendly and compassionate individuals.

Nikkei Manor has been written up in various Japanese publications, by the AARP, and the NY Times. It is used as an example for the successful housing of aging Japanese Americans.

Nikkei Manor provides a variety of activities to keep their residents stimulated. I like the way they hold monthly celebrations combining residents’ birthdays. Their activity department is to be commended on all their entertainment options.

A drawback to Nikkei Manor is the fact that there is not a lot of parking available here. The facility is located in the retail area of the Seattle International District, thereby making parking scarce. There are probably about 20 slots available in front of their facility.

Their physical address is: 700 6th Avenue South, Seattle, WA. 98104. Contact Nikkei Manor at 206-726-6467 for more information.

If you’re interested in the downtown Seattle waterfront area, Heritage House at the Market is for you. More particularly, if you like Pike Place Market, this senior housing community is for you. This assisted living facility, operated by Providence Health System, is located in the Market. Residents can enjoy a leisurely stroll to the Market. They can sit and enjoy the Waterfront Park, or walk amongst the shops. The variety of outdoor activities here is endless.

The facility itself has a dining area with a beautiful view of both Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. Residents and visitors can watch the Washington State ferries travel by. On a clear, bright daythe view just cannot be beat! The dining room is used for entertainment functions and provides a wonderfully relaxing environment. The natural light is welcomed. The food is good, also.

Other amenities here include a library, recreation room, satellite television, and an adjacent medical clinic. There is a beauty shop on-site, also. This senior housing community holds monthly birthday parties for residents with live entertainment. It is very popular with residents.

There are a variety of medical options available for residents. The medical clinic next door offers a variety of services. Dental, mental, and pharmacy services are but a few offered for the residents’ convenience.

The entrance to the community is off the street a bit. Upon entering the front door, the receptionist can be viewed straight ahead. There is a sitting room on the left, and entrance into the facility on the right. I found the lobby decorum rather dimly lit, making it difficult for me to see. The rest of Heritage House reminded me of an older building with a quaint atmosphere. It is a pleasant atmosphere, overall.

Visitor’s parking will need to be validated. The covered lot is located next to the building.

Heritage House at the Market can be reached at 206-382-4119. Their physical address is: 1533 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA. 98101.

The above-mentioned senior housing communities available in the Seattle area are but a few of the multitude available. Check into them and learn. You are bound to be impressed.
