Completing Your GED in Jacksonville, Florida

In today’s ever changing society, having at least a High School education is a must. Sometimes, due to unexpected circumstances in life, students find themselves not able to complete a traditional High School program, and often drop out of school without completing their education. That is where Florida Community College’s GED program can help. Students ages 16 and over can apply for enrollment in GED Comprehensive Review Classes if they have withdrawn from a public or private school. These classes not only help students prepare for the GED exam, but also help students gain a State of Florida High School Diploma, after they have successfully completed of the GED test. Classes, both daytime and evening, are located at FCCJ and some neighborhood public High Schools. Best of all, these classes are free!

If learning from home seems like a better option, Florida Community College at Jacksonville offers the GED on TV program. The program delivers lessons via television, so students can learn in the comfort of their own home. Areas of study include: Math, Science, Writing Skills, Interpreting Literature and the Arts, and Social Studies. When studies are completed, and students successfully complete the program, they may participate in the college’s graduation program, designed for Adult Studies students.

On the other hand, some students feel they are academically prepared, but are unsure of the next step towards being a GED holder. To ensure academic success, FCCJ has a practice GED test that is available to students free of charge. Based on the outcome of the pre-GED, students may wish to remediate in some areas, or go on to take the official GED exam. Students wishing to take the GED exam, may register in person at any campus, provided the following qualifications are met:
1. You must have an original Social Security Card and Florida picture ID.
2. Be a resident of Duval County age 18 or older.
3. If you are 16 or 17years old, you may request a waiver to take the GED.
4. Pay a $50 test fee, which covers all sections of the exam. The exam may also be taken in parts, with an individual fee charged per section.

When test day arrives, a student will need to a valid Florida Driver’s License or ID card (with picture on it), their Social Security Card, and a pink registration fee receipt. The entire test takes approximately ten and a half hours, and covers Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and Interpreting Literature and the Arts. After testing, students need to allow eight weeks to receive their test results.
