Doomsday Prepper Home Storage Ideas

Some people ridicule “doomsday preppers” but it’s true that we could face any kind of catastrophe, from a hurricane, to power failure, to much worse, at any time. So, if you’re a doomsday prepper, or you’re just putting back some extra supplies, you might be interested in a few unusual places to hide stuff. Whether you’re afraid someone will come and steal from you, or you just have a small home, here are some ideas for creating new storage spaces.

One roomy place for food and more is the area under the bed. To hide the stuff, though, do away with your regular bed frame. Take four boards, screw them into a square, and lay the box spring and mattress on it. The area is so large – particularly if you have a queen or king size bed – that you can easily store water, blankets, pillows, gadgets, tools, and devices.

Turn bookshelves into hidden storage areas. To do so, use cardboard boxes – without lids – and make them look like rows of books. Slide the boxes onto the shelves and cover the area that faces outward with book spines. That can be done by cutting the spines off of thrift store books, and gluing them onto the boxes. You could also print out book spine images and attach them to the boxes. On high shelves, they look exactly like real books but lower shelves can leave people looking into the boxes.

Some dressers and wardrobes, which feature legs, can offer unusual storage areas. Remove the legs, enclose the area with boards, paint the item so it all looks the same, and use the new area for storage. Night stands with drawers offer even more storage.

When you put a PVC pipe into the ground it gives you lots of room for storing things. Screw a cap onto one end and put the pipe by an air conditioning unit, or elsewhere to blend in; tap the capped end into the ground. Put a cap on the upper end and that’s it. The pipe can hold all sorts of things and, if needed, you can tie a string onto certain items to ensure retrieval. Use the pipe to protect documents, hide money and jewels, or to conceal other things that you consider valuable.

Store excess water by putting it in a milk jug, tying a rope around it, and hoisting into a tree. Hide other things in trees by putting them in onion bags. Put a plastic bag inside to protect from rain. Purchase lamps with removable bottoms and you can store a lot of things inside them. Hide stuff in the bottoms of potted plants, under rocks outside, and even in the clothing in your closet. You’ll be surprised at how many things you can conceal and store when you really take a good look at the things in your home.
