How to Fix a Scratch on Your Car

If you have a scratch on your car there is no reason to get upset. All scratches can be repaired if you take the necessary steps.

The first thing that you will need to do is buy the materials that you will need to get started. The two main ingredients that you will need are body compound and primer. After purchasing body compound and primer, you are then ready to move onto the scratch.

Locate the scratch and wash it with a mild car washing soap. This will remove any wax or excess dirt that may be built up around the scratch. After cleaning the scratch, you will want to sand away the edges with sand paper. If any rust has built up you will want to make sure to get rid of it entirely. After you are done sanding, be sure to blow away any excess rust that may be setting on the surface.

Next you will want to isolate the scratch in order to avoid damaging the paint around it. Seal off an area with masking tape and newspaper so that you can only see the scratch and a very small area around it.

At this point, you will be ready to start working on the scratch itself. Use a plastic putty knife to apply body compound to the scratch. Before moving on, make sure that the compound is completely dry.

After your body compound dries, sand it flat and brush away the excess debris. You should then spray a small amount of primer over the scratch. Again, be sure to let it dry completely before moving on.

The last step that you need to take is painting over the area with touch-up paint. This paint can be bought at your dealer’s parts department. They will be able to supply you with the exact color paint that you are looking for based on your cars vehicle identification number.

After letting the touch-up paint dry your job is finished, and your car is back to looking as good as new.
