How to Successfully Install a New Garbage Disposal

The basic tools you will need for this job are some channel lock pliers, some plumbers putty and a philips head and straight head screwdriver. The first thing you will want to do is to disconnect the drain piping to the old disposal. Then unplug the disposal from the wall outlet under the sink. Next turn the locking ring just between the sink flange and the disposal, this will allow the disposal drop-down. You can now remove the disposal from underneath the sink.

If you are installing a new garbage disposal, then it would be best to install a new sink flange/gasket assembly. To do this, first remove the old sink flange and discard. Take the new sink flange and install plumbers putty around the flange where it seats into the sink. Apply the flange to the sink pressing down firmly until you can start to see the plumbers putty squeezing out from the flange. From the bottom of the sink, install the fiber gasket followed by the upper mounting collar and then install the lower mounting collar followed by the split ring, which snaps into the sink flange. You may need someone to press down on the flange as you snap the ring into place.

Once you have these parts in place, tighten the screws on the lower mounting collar which will secure the flange in place. Remove the excess plumbers putty that has squeezed out around the edge of the sink flange. If you’re using the disposal to connect your dishwasher drain hose, then knock out the plug with a screwdriver at the connection point on the side of the disposal. Next install the locking ring and rubber gasket on top of your disposal. Install your power cord on your new disposal and then left the disposal into place and secure it to the sink flange by turning the locking ring until it clicks and is tight.

You will be able to rotate the disposal as needed in order to align your drain pipes. Reinstall your drain pipes and plug your disposal in. Turn on your cold water and also turn on the disposal. Make sure there are no leaks in your plumbing or around your sink flange. This completes the installation of your new garbage disposal. By following the instructions in this article you will be able to install your new garbage disposal with ease.
