Product Review: Kirkland Signature Scrubbing Household Surface Wipes

Recently, I purchased three containers of Kirkland Signature Scrubbing Household Surface Wipes sold together in a package at my local Costco for under $10. Anyone who regularly purchases cleaning products knows this a great deal on such a large quantity of cleaning products, as a single container of Lysol Sanitizing wipes containing only 35 wipes goes for around $4.

Each container has a different scent, and contains fifty-five 8 inch by 10 inch wipes that are thick with a textured surface. The orange scent is particularly sweet and fragrant, and really leaves an entire room smelling fantastic after wiping down a surface. The package claims that the Kirkland Disinfecting Household Surface Wipes are, “Effective in 5 minutes against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella choleraesuis, and Psedomonas aeruginosa. Effective against flu virus Influenza A2/Hong Kong.” The fact that the wipes are effective against such a wide range of bugs make this product particularly useful during the winter months when nasty illnesses flourish.

While I generally prefer cleaning products derived from natural sources, I like the handiness and ease of use that these wipes offer, and use them when I’m in a rush to clean the house or when I’m out of my natural cleaning products. Since they come in an easy dispense container, no sponges or water is required, except on food contact surfaces, in which the makers of Kirkland wipes recommend a thorough rinse.

Since I am somewhat uncomfortable with the thought of leaving chemical residues on frequently touched surfaces and own several pets, I often do a quick rinse with a sponge after disinfecting with Kirkland Scrubbing Surface Wipes on surfaces other than food contact surfaces such as toilet seats, around litter boxes, and on countertops. I also feel that a rinse is necessary because although Kirkland Household Surface Wipes leave any surface looking clean and shiny, they do leave a bit of stickiness behind that is particularly yucky feeling when pairing floors and bare feet. Also, since the main ingredients of the Kirkland Signature Household Surface Wipes are barely pronounceable and the back of the container states hazards to human and domestic animals, I do prefer to wear latex gloves when handling the wipes to minimize the chance that the chemical solution on the wipes will soak into my skin.

While I have mentioned several times that I am uncomfortable with the chemical component of the Kirkland Wipes, I must admit that I will continue to use them where they work the best-in bathtubs and shower stalls. In the past, I used Comet brand mold and mildew remover in the battle against soap scum, but Kirkland Scrubbing Household Surface Wipes prevail at removing shower gunk beyond my wildest dreams. Using a bit of elbow grease must be expected when removing any soap scum, but very little is required when cleaning with Kirkland brand wipes. Since the wipes are so thickly woven, they don’t tear or rip when scrubbing, and the texture of the wipes scour mold and mildew right off without damaging any of the surfaces in one’s bathroom. Following with a rinse with water will leave your shower sparkling clean, disinfected, and smelling great. These wipes leave chromed pieces such as shower knobs and faucets particularly shiny.

All in all, I do recommend the use of Kirkland Signature Scrubbing Household Surface Wipes on select surfaces, always followed by a rinse with water and paired with latex gloves when more “green” cleaning products are not available.
