Putting Together a Model Car: Part 1

Putting together a model car is a very fun and very rewarding hobby. I, along with many other people, enjoy putting these cars, planes, trucks, tanks, and other models together often. It can take a lot of time, depending on what model you select, but putting together model cars is very rewarding in the end and can be a lot of fun.

First, you need to choose your model. For the beginning model maker, you will probably want to select a car. Cars are almost always the easiest models to put together. Also, the beginning model maker will want to select a level 1 or 2 model. The models are set in a 1, 2, or 3 rating, and they go in order from easiest to hardest. The level 1 models will generally not require glue or paint, and are very easy to snap together. The level 2 models will generally require glue and probably paint, and are a little harder to put together. The level 3 models are not for those who are easily discouraged. They will require glue, paint, possibly putty, and are almost impossible to put together. So, choose your model based on type and level. Also, it is important to put together models that you will enjoy looking at in the future, and that have a piece count around what you want it to be. For example, my favorite model is a level 3 pirate ship called the “Jolly Roger.” It had around 1,000 pieces and needed to be painted and glued throughout. It took a lot of hours and was one of the most rewarding.

Next, you need to know what tools and paints to use. If the model needs paint, you will probably be able to find the colors needed on the side of the box. Then, you will need some sizes of brushes. It is best to have a wide brush, a medium sized brush, and a tiny brush. Also, you will need to differentiate between the gloss colors and the flat colors. Don’t forget the paint thinner! This is essential for cleaning your brushes. Then, you will need model glue. There are generally 2 types of glue. There is glue for die-cast metal models and glue for plastic models. Then, you will need a good applicator. The best applicator in the world is probably the cheapest. Toothpicks have worked for me the entire time. Also, you get a lot of them for the price. Then, you will need to make sure that you don’t need a small set of screwdrivers. If you do, you can get a decent set of precision screwdrivers for around a dollar at your local hardware store. Now, you need to get some accessories. For example, you can get a nice holder for your paints. This will allow your paints, paint thinner, brushes, toothpicks, and glues to sit in a small carousel that will help to organize your model. Finally, you can buy decals. Generally, the model kit will include any decals you need, but some hobby stores will sell special decal kits for some model kits. If you want to personalize the model, you can purchase one of these.

Now that you have done all the selection for your model car, you can begin putting it together.
