Romantic Summer Getaways in Washington State

Picture it: The sound of the ocean crashing against the shore, bare feet in the sand, and a warm hand to hold as you marvel in that peaceful feeling you get when you’re miles away from home. Washington State has all of this to offer and more. From the islands of the San Juans to Ocean Shores and berry picking at Remlinger Farms, there is something to please every couple this summer. Here are my top five picks.

Orcas Island, San Juan Islands
Washington State has one thing the others do not: The San Juan Islands. The largest and arguably most attractive island in this group is Orcas Island, located just off the northern coast of Washington State. There are many opportunities for fun in the sun or relaxing by the sea when you visit one of these popular resorts: Doe Bay, Rosario, and Moran State Park. Mt. Constitution, with an elevation of 2,409 feet, offers amazing views of the nearby islands of Lopez, San Juan, and Shaw. It’s hard to imagine anything more romantic than kayaking through the bay with the one you love, watching seals swimming side by side, or soaking in mineral hot tubs to ease away the stresses left far behind on the mainland.

Ocean Shores
Ocean Shores boasts a quiet, comfortable summer-home/retirement community that is perfect for getting away and finding peace of mind and heart. Located on Washington’s Olympic peninsula, Ocean Shores hosts a variety of seaside activities such as beachcombing, digging for razor clams when in season, horse rentals, hiking, bicycle riding, and leisurely walks along the six-mile stretch of sand dunes leading to the entrance of Grays Harbor. There are over two dozen hotels to choose from and houses are also available for rent as long as they are reserved well ahead of time.

Columbia River Gorge
Lewis and Clark referred to this section of the Northwest as the gateway to the Pacific and rightfully so. The Columbia River Gorge along the Washington/Oregon state lines is a waterfall lover’s dream come true. A little known fact is that this area holds the world’s largest concentration of high waterfalls. If trekking through a botanical oasis is more your idea of fun, try walking through the moss-covered rainforests. You may also find yourself skiing, fishing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, and windsurfing all in the same day. There is no shortage of activities for the couple on the go.

Remlinger Farms
Take a nice, relaxing day trip and visit Remlinger Farms in Carnation. This family-owned farm is located just 45 minutes East of Seattle and is well worth the scenic drive to get there. Busy downtown executives find solace in visiting the 200 acre beautifully cultivated farmland with its rows and rows of fresh strawberries, raspberries, and vegetables. There is a full-service restaurant on the premises as well as a store that contains fresh pies, snacks, and treats. Take advantage of the Fall season by picking your own pumpkin in one of their many fields. Remlinger Farms is a throwback to a simpler time and place.

La Connor
This is perhaps one of the most romantic destinations in Washington State. Located in Skagit Valley about one hour north of Seattle, La Connor offers something for everyone. This historic waterfront village is host to the famous Skagit Valley Tulip Festival held annually in April. Imagine driving through the winding back roads while looking out your window and seeing rows and rows of vibrant colors. If antique browsing is one of your favorite past times, you will be in heaven when you visit La Connor. There are endless shops to explore and each one has a flavor all its own. Enjoy the quiet comfort offered in this welcoming small town.
