Solitude

Broken shells scatter the shore,
their missing pieces forever lost beyond reach.
A perfect gem is whisked away,
slipping through my fingers
as a wave sweeps the sand.

The steel blue sky soon fades to black,
scattering stars across its face.
A full moon commands the tide to return,
quickly reclaiming my darkening path.

Walking in solitude and headed toward home,
I think back on the day.
How different life seems when darkness comes,
especially when walking alone.

Poetic justice has come to call,
becoming ever so clear.
A revelation of life has washed in with the tide,
a lesson learned
too late.
