Sit down in a comfortable chair
While you are performing in front of a crowd, you have to be comfortable with everything. Therefore, find a relaxing chair for yourself and position yourself nicely, so that you can carry out your task with ease. Remember, it is important to position yourself correctly before holding the fiddle.
Grasp the arm of the fiddle
Hold the fiddle with your left hand in a way that your palm is positioned underneath the strings. You have to grab the arm of the instrument, which is also known as the neck in a guitar.
Lift the fiddle from backwards
The back side of the fiddle should be lifted upwards in a way that it rests underneath your chin. The remaining side will lie on your shoulder, which can be a bit uncomfortable, especially if you are not used to it. In order to avoid such a situation, you can attach a shoulder-rest to the base of the fiddle.
Bend your wrist on the fiddle’s arm
Now, you have to bend the wrist of your left hand on the fiddle’s arm. This will help you position your fingers on the strings nicely. You will not find this to be easy at the start, but the situation will get better once your practice regularly.
Hold the bow tightly
After positioning the fiddle in the correct way, you have to hold the bow tightly between your thumb and fingers of the right hand. However, you need to keep your wrist loose in this case.
Start playing the music
You can start playing the music now. If you feel that this position is not comfortable for you, place the back end of the fiddle close to your chest rather than the chin.
