How to Make Osso Bucco in a Slow Cooker

Osso Bucco is one of the traditional meals in Italy, having its origin in Milan, which is the reason why this dish is also known as Italian stew bucco or ossobucco.

This dish is usually made of steak shanks or veal. Simmering in a savoury sauce, the braised veal is filled with vegetables, spices and wine. In winters, it can be one of the best delights that you can offer to your guests and is extremely healthy at the same time. If you prepare osso bucco in a slow cooker, you will enjoy a more enhanced flavour, due to more uniform cooking.

Tomato paste: 2 & ½ tbsp
Wine: ¼ cup

Instructions

  • 1

    Combine the ingredients

Grab a medium-sized mixing bowl and put salt, pepper and flour in it. You are now required to dredge or spread the seasoned flour with shank steaks.

  • 2

    Heat the olive oil

In a cooking pan, you should heat the olive oil over medium flame. Once the oil gets hot, braise or fry the shank steaks until they become golden brown. Having fried them nicely, you should drain them and put aside.

  • 3

    Fry the crushed garlic

It is now the turn of crushed garlic to be fried. Fry it until it turns brown. You can now put chopped onion and sauté until they get caramelized. You may continue to sauté after adding the chopped carrots and celery.

  • 4

    Add tomato paste and wine

You should now add tomato paste in the mixture and sauté it for another 3 minutes. While stirring constantly, you are required to add wine in the mixture and keep stirring until it gets dry.

  • 5

    Add other ingredients

Put sugar and some more water to the mixture while you are stirring it. Now let it simmer for another couple of minutes. You can now bring the mixture to boil after adding the browned shanks.

  • 6

    Cook

Cover the mixture and let it simmer over low flame for about three hours on a slow cooker. Allow it to simmer until it is tender. If you are short on time, you can use a pressure cooker as it will allow you to save some time. However, using the slow cooker is highly recommended if you are looking to enjoy the best taste.
