If you have ever seen a giant pink mustache on the grille of cars in your neighborhood, those are Lyft drivers. Just how much money do these drivers make though?
Lyft is popular transportation network company. Its smartphone app allows for peer-to-peer ridesharing by connecting passengers who need a ride to drivers. Unlike other similar companies and traditional taxi service, Lyft does not charge fares but requests “donations” from their passengers. Lyft is currently available in major cities across the United States, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Denver, and Dallas.
So, how much do Lyft drivers earn in a day? Let’s try to find some answers.
Lyft doesn’t have any official information on the average salary, but the company does claim that its drivers are making “up to $35/hour.”
As for the requirements to become a driver, you must be at least 23 years old and own a 2000 or newer car. You must also have an iPhone or Android smartphone to use their app and pass a phone screen, in-person meeting, background, and DMV record checks.
Lyft drivers reportedly earn 80% of the donations sent by passengers. A Lyft driver from Los Angeles recently told reddit exactly how much he gets paid for driving for the company.
“We’re guaranteed at least $15/hour, $25/hour during peak times (‘power hours’),” the driver wrote. “Average/hour hovers between $20-$25.”
So, the reality is that Lyft driver don’t make a lot of money, but the job may be a good way to supplement your income in your free time. Drivers can choose their own hours.
