How to Bottle Feed Puppies

In case puppies become orphaned or their mothers reject them, you might need to look after and bottle feed them. Keep in mind that puppies require lots of milk as they are growing. You might need to lose some sleep in the first few weeks for this noble cause. It is advised that you excrete milk from the mother and feed the puppies as it consists of protective antibodies and colostrum. You can also feed them a prepared milk replacement by following some basic techniques.

    Get a small bottle with nipple

    You will need to buy a bottle with a small nipple that is designed for puppies. Wash the equipment before and after feeding your puppy. In case you have a dishwasher, you can sterilise the bottle and nipple after feeding the puppies. If you don’t have a steriliser, you can always place the equipments in boiling water for almost five minutes and then let it air dry. You can even add a small amount of bleach in water for cleaning purposes.

    Get milk replacement

    You need to buy a milk replacement which is designed especially for puppies. It is easily available at your local pet store or online. You can also talk to a veterinarian as they will have a good variety of milk replacement formulas that you can use to ensure that your puppy gets the proper nutrients.

    Prepare milk replacement formula

    Next you need to prepare the milk replacement formula by following the written instructions. Remember to prepare the amount which is required for a puppy in one day. It might take a few days for you to understand the exact amount that the puppy requires on a daily basis.

    Water for the formula

    You need to use tepid or room temperature water in order to make the milk replacement. Always make sure that you use clean clear purified water to make the milk formula.

    Position

    You are required to feed the puppy in its natural position, which is basically on its stomach. Avoid over extending the head as the puppy will have difficulty taking the milk. In order to improve the bond between you and your puppy, you can hold it while feeding.
