History of Tate Modern Art Gallery

Tate has a long history dating back to 1897 when it was only one site that had a limited number of British artworks. But by 1992, the Tate Trustees decided to open a new and more organised art gallery in London and that was when it was decided to build the Tate Modern, which was intended to feature international modern art. Then later in 1994, a bankside power station building was selected to open the new Tate Modern which was designed by Herzog and De Meuron - two Swiss architects. The building of power station was completed in two intervals during 1947 and 1963. It was later converted into Tate Modern in 2000 and after its opening, the art gallery has been visited by 40+ million people. Later in 2009, further improvement plans were suggested to upgrade the building but the project is still under process.
