5 State Parks Located Near the Thousand Islands

The Thousands Islands Region of New York State is a beautiful, scenic, and historic place to visit. In addition to boat tours, many families travel and camp at one of the many State Parks in the area. Below is a summary of five parks in the area and some of the activities that they have to offer visitors.

(1) Grass Point State Park is located in Alexandria Bay, New York and is open from mid-May to early October. Grass Point State Park offers camping and vacation cabin rentals. Located at the channel for the St. Lawrence River, Grass Point State Park is famous for it’s fishing. In addition to fishing, other outdoor activities include picnics, swimming, boating, and much more! (2) Cumberland Bay State Park is located in Plattsburg, New York and is open from May to early October. Cumberland Bay is located on the western end of Lake Champlain. There are over 150 campsites, playing fields, pavilions, picnic tables with grills, and a playground for children. Household pets are allowed in the park; however, they must have a certificate or collar tag that states vaccinations are up-to-date. (3) Wellesley Island State Park is located in Fineview, New York and is open all year round. Camping and vacation cabin retails begin in late April till October. Wellesley Island State Park was listed in 2004 as one of the top 100 campgrounds in the nation and in 2005 was named one of Reserve America’s top outdoor locations. The park has a marina and four different boat launches. A nine hole golf course is also located on the island. Other outdoor activities include swimming, fishing, visiting the nature center, hiking, and much more. Much of this region is highly secluded and only accessible by boat or on foot. There are playgrounds for children and picnic tables for outdoor eating. Household pets are allowed on the park grounds; however, they must be on a leash and have current proof of rabies vaccination. (4) Long Point State Park is located in Three Mile Bay, New York and is open from May to Columbus Day. This park was listed as one of the top 100 campgrounds in the nation for the 2005 season. Long Point State Park is located near Chaumont Bay on Lake Ontario. Mostly surrounded by water, the area is secluded and great for outdoor fun. Fishing, boating, and playgrounds make for great family time activities. Hunting is permitted during New York State’s hunting season. All household pets are allowed to enter the park; however, they must have current proof of vaccinations and be leashed at all times. (5) Keewaydin State Park is located in Alexandria Bay, New York and is open all year long. Camping season begins in mid-May and ends around September and the marina opens at the same time and closes in October. Keewaydin State Park is located on the St. Lawrence River. There are 48 different campsites overlooking the river. The park has picnic areas, swimming pools, a marina, boat rentals, and many more facilities. Ice fishing and cross country skiing are popular wintertime activities here. Household pets are allowed to enter certain areas of the park; however, they must be caged or leashed and have the proper proof of recent vaccinations.
