Lego Storage Tray Unit: Store Your Bricks and Bits with Ease

Being an avid Lego collector I have tried a lot of different ways to store pieces. The best way was clear fishing boxes for smaller pieces and large rubber totes for the larger ones. Then there are the small rare things like gold coins, body parts, magic wands and greenery. Those were always getting bounced around in the tackle boxes or slipping under the plastic dividers. When I saw the Lego Storage Tray Unit (851917) was on sale in the most recent Lego catalog I ordered one to give it a try.

This isn’t something that I would buy for someone that has a few Lego sets. This is for the hard core collector that has thousands of pieces and a serious problem with getting them organized. This is a step up from the cardboard Lego Store & Carry Case (EL709) and is something that is suitable for both kids as well as adults.

The unit itself is sturdy once it is built, there is a minimal amount of building that is required but it is easy to accomplish in less than ten minutes. Because I Know this is going to get moved around a lot I reinforced it with some industrial wood glue. It measures fourteen inches wide, fourteen inches high and twelve inches deep. The trays will hold roughly two hundred pieces per compartment but that does depend on the size of the bricks and elements that you are storing.

It’s normally priced at $49.99 but the Lego Shop At Home Catalog has it on sale (probably until Christmas) for $29.99. At full suggested retail price this isn’t worth it but if you are a Lego collector and want something too to house common items that are used often, this is a nice collectable item. This also makes for a great Christmas present; anyone that is into Lego would love to receive this as a gift!

My only beef with this are the trays; they could have been made from a thicker plastic but even so, they aren’t going to fall apart any time soon. I would have loved it if there were some Lego logos on it but as it stands, it’s just plain painted red wood with gray plastic trays. You can stack these on top of each other if you want to build a larger module but I do suggest fastening them with Velcro or using side mount brackets.

I like having the Lego Storage Tray Unit for my most common pieces but I do with that it looked a little more “Lego”; for thirty dollars they could have added some stickers or a Lego plate to the side of it. I’ll be honest, there is no way I would pay $49.99 for this but at $29.99, I had to give it a try and see if it was something that could help me get my bits and bricks in order. This gets a solid eight out of a possible ten. A lower price and nicer appearance would make this a ten!
