Car Donations: Donate Your Car in Ft. Lauderdale

Before you sell that old junker, take a minute and consider how many charities out there can benefit from it. Donate your car! Many people don’t know that they can donate a car to their favorite charity without a lot of effort or hassle. A car donation is a great idea for everyone involved!

Why Donate a Car?

Charities take donated vehicles and sell them, either at dealer auctions or to salvage yards. The money they receive helps to pay for all the things each particular charity works for: medical research, helping the homeless, aiding battered women and children, and a host of other worthy endeavors.

For you, a car donation means a tax deduction. The IRS allows for deduction on a car donation up to $500. If your car is worth more than $500, most charities will provide you with a notification of the amount for which your car sold and this will be your deduction. In some instances, you can deduct the fair market value of your car donation without waiting for the charity to sell the auto. Please see Publication 4303, ‘A Donor’s Guide to Car Donation’ for more information.

How Do I Donate?

Most charities have a pick-up service that will come to your home or business and pick up the vehicle, as well as the title, at no cost to you. In some instances, you can donate a car without a title. Please contact your charity of choice to determine if they accept untitled vehicles.

Who Wants My Car?

Many charities want your car! In the Ft. Lauderdale area, consider the South Florida branch of the Salvation Army. The SA prefers working vehicles, though some locations do accept cars which don’t run. Simply call the Ft. Lauderdale branch of SA’s Adult Rehabilitation Center at (954) 463-3725 or fill out a simple web form to arrange your donation. More information can be found at the ARC website.

Along a slightly different road (so to speak), you can also consider donating to posterity. Or, at least, helping to keep posterity financed. The Ft. Lauderdale Antique Car Museum also accepts car donations, as well as car parts. Because the Antique Car Museum is a non-profit foundation for education, your car donation is just as tax deductible! An online form is available to contact them, or you can simply phone the Curator, Mr. Russ Galiano, Jr., at (954)779-7300 for information about pick-up and delivery.

Donate It!

With all of the benefits and nothing to lose, consider donating your car to the charity of your choice this year. It’s a wonderful way to save on your government taxes and feel great at the same time!
