Free Entertainment in New York City: Free Music and Free Movies

Yes there are plenty of free things to enjoy in New York City. You can stroll though almost any of the parks and see impromptu performances by comics and musicians, but there are free organized events also. all year long. Lets see what will be coming up and maybe you can enjoy a free day on the city.

Hudson River Park

Like Blues music? Or Jazz or classical or almost any other style. All summer long there are free concerts at Hudson River Park. There are 19 free events in August alone. Hudson River Park is a great place to spend the whole day enjoying things such as tennis and stick around for the free concerts at night. Check out the free movie nights. All you have to do is bring something to sit on. And you get free popcorn to boot.

Lincoln Center Outdoors

This year’s theme is Blues Music and over the summer there will be 100 free performances, All in the evening. Free but get there early. The Chairs fill up fast. Check the schedule on the site.

New York City Street Fairs

If you have never been to a New York City Street Fair, you have been missing out on one of the greatest experiences ever. There is at least one going on in the city every weekend. Check out the local papers for exact time and locations. You get food at great prices and all of them have free entertainment.

Shakespeare in the Park

Would you like Meryl Streep for free? You can this year at Shakespear in the Park Central Park that is. The stage is set up at 81st Street and Central Park West Keep an eye on the web site for dates things can change do to the weather. There are many other free things going on in Central park including New York Philharmonic concerts.

Outpost ” Under the Stars”

Take a short trip to downtown Brooklyn on a Sunday night in August( less than a half hour by train) and see a free movie. Everything from “Sunset Blvd.”. To “Godzilla Vs. Mothra”

Little Italy Festivals

Little Italy is a world in it self. And when they have a festival it is the King of Festivals.
The most famous is San Genarro in Sept., with free entertainment any night. But there are others also. There are specie events every weekend during the summer including a singing waiters competition.
ON Sept 4th you can see a free circus on Mulbury Street.

Union Square Partnership’s Summer In The Square

Broadway Under the Stars

City Parks Free Concert Series

Every summer the Parks Dept. has free concerts in the parks in all the Boroughs. So wherever you are, you are near free music. Concerts are at 7:00 P.M. rain or shine.

The East River Music Project

Summer Screen At Mc Carren Park, Brooklyn

This park is on the Manhattan side of the Bridge. This year you can see such features as “The Wizard o f Oz” for free.

Socrates Sculpture Park is in Long Island City Queens, right on the East River with a beautiful view of the Manhattan sky line. What better backdrop for free movies every Wednesday at sunset through August.

Quite a line up. And if you miss anything this year, it will be there next year. If you want to look for ore, check the local papers. Many of the local organizations and churches will have their own free parties going on all summer and into the fall. You might even be able to catch some indoor things in the winter. Happy Hunting
