Homemade Valentine’s Day Gifts

Valentine’s day is a day where we honor those we love most. Why not honor them with something heartfelt and homemade? Whether you’re looking for a cheap gift alternative, or just looking for something unique, creating gifts is always a good way to show people how much you care.

Here are some gift ideas to show that special someone how you feel.

  1. Shadowbox picture: Here’s a twist on the picture frame. Putting a picture in a picture frame and giving it to someone is nice, but doesn’t require a whole lot of thought other than what frame to buy and what picture. This can be a heartfelt idea, but why not take it to the next step? A shadowbox picture allows you to incorporate some of the things that remind you of that person or that are special to the two of you. A shadowbox frame can be purchased at any frame or craft store. It’s deeper with glass at the front of the box to allow you to put in 3D objects like flowers, jewelry, sports memorabilia, and much much more. A shadowbox picture allows you to put more of yourself into something that your loved one will be able to display and keep forever. It also allows you to let your imagination run wild. If you truly want to impress someone, take the time to build something unique.
  2. A Love Quote a Day: When you love someone enough to tell them, why not do it every day of the year? I created this for my husband for Valentine’s Day one year and he absolutely loved it. I purchased a small plastic box, but you could use wood, metal, a basket, or whatever you wish. I decorated mine with stickers, but, again, put in your own style. I then found a lot of quotes and poems about love, as well as writing some of my own. There are plenty of websites with quotes to use. I typed them all up, copy and pasting most of it, and then printed it out on different papers like vellum and card stock. After this I cut them out, folded them up, and placed them in the box for my husband to share. If you don’t want to do all the days of the year, just do some for your loved one to look at when they need a lift. You could also adapt this idea to a homemade calendar or book. Trust me; they’ll enjoy the time put in as well as the wonderful sentiment.
  3. Heartfelt Coupon Book: I remember making coupon books in grade school for my mom and dad. They were always coupons for cleaning up my room or feeding the dog. Who knew that this could work as an adult as well? A coupon book is actually a wonderfully heart felt way to dedicate yourself to the one you love. You can use them as a way to say you’ll help your spouse with the housework or as a way to spice up your love life. All you need is some cardstock, markers, staples or ribbon to bind it together, and some imagination. It’s an easy way to show them that you’re committed to what makes them happy.
  4. Baked Goods: Never underestimate the power of homemade food. Taking the time to make your husband’s favorite cookie, or your girlfriend’s favorite cake shows that you love them enough to spend time on them and also that you know them well enough to make them something they’ll love. Always keep food in mind; it’s cheap, easy, and always appreciated.
  5. Scrapbook: Scrapbooking has gained a lot of popularity in the last several years. It’s a unique and interesting way to preserve your memories. Scrapbooks also make wonderful gifts. Now, I’m not saying that you have to spend tons of money on all the supplies and scrapbook your lives, but why not make a small theme scrapbook. Scrapbooks don’t have to revolve around pictures, but can include pages of memories, favorite quotes and stories, or even qualities that you love about that person. You can use newspaper clippings, pictures from magazines, pages from books, song lyrics, poems, pictures, flowers, greeting cards, or anything that you have on hand. A mini scrapbook is a good way to go because it lends itself to a small theme where you can focus on your love for that person. It’s simple, heart felt, and they’ll love it for years to come.

Home made gifts have a little something special added in. The fact that you’ve taken the time to remember someone you love and create something special for them is the biggest gift of all. So, when you’re looking for something special, don’t forget to put a little bit of heart into it. The ones you love will appreciate it.
