How to Clean and Care for Slate Tiles and Tables

Slate tables are strong and exceptionally sturdy, and they are a fantastic alternative to wood tables, especially in households with children and pets. They can’t be ruined by water rings, nicks, or other problems that typically occur with wood tables. They can take more abuse than other types of furniture, and with proper care and cleaning they’ll last forever.

I love my slate tables because I have kids and pets, and dusting is one of my least favorite household chores. I had to dust my wood tables at least once a week to keep them looking good, but I must admit I sometimes ignore my slate tile tables for weeks. They don’t collect dust like wood typically does, and fingerprints are unapparent. I wouldn’t have any other type of tables in my living room, and I absolutely love my slate sofa table, coffee table, and my two slate tile end tables.

General Cleaning

Slate table tiles aren’t meant to look perfect, and unlike wood, they can be ignored and will continue to look good. Drink coasters and table protectors are no longer necessary since moisture won’t damage slate, but dust, crumbs, and grime can still accumulate on the surface. Approximately every week or two, go over the tiles with a damp rag. Occasionally rinse and ring out the rag, and continue wiping the surface until all of the tiles are clean. You can dry them with a clean dry rag, or they will air-dry in a matter of minutes.

Deep Cleaning

Crumbs, hair, and other debris eventually get into the metal framework of slate tile tables and require a more thorough cleaning. Simply remove the table tiles, and clean the frame of each table with a clean damp rag and warm water. You can add a little Lysol or other germ-killing cleaner to the water to help clean and disinfect the frame. After cleaning, dry the frame, and replace the slate tiles. Wipe the top of the tiles with a clean wet rag. Allow them to air-dry, or dry them with a clean dry rag or towel.

Storage Tips

Appropriate care is as important as occasional cleaning, and if you must store slate table tiles, wrap each tile separately with several layers of newsprint, and box them vertically to prevent breakage. It’s also helpful to line the box with bubble wrap. This is especially important when boxing table tiles for an upcoming move. They’re less likely to break when boxed and stored vertically and lined with bubble wrap to absorb shocks and bumps. When properly cleaned and cared for, slate table tiles will last a lifetime.
