How to Keep Entertained During a Power Outage

Recently, the area I live in has begun experiencing a larger amount of power outages due to storms. When the lights go out, most of us run and grab flashlights and candles and just wait for things to return to normal. Hopefully, the power outage won’t last too long, but it is possible that it might. Not having power can definitely be frustrating. While these outages are certainly inconvenient, they don’t have to be boring. I will be giving a few ideas on how to keep you, your family, and friends entertained during a power outage.

Telling stories is a great way to stay entertained. It might be hard to read for long periods of time with only the aid of a flashlight, but you can certainly recite a story you have memorized or just make up a story as you go along. Remember that it is all in good fun, so don’t worry too much about the contents of the story itself. Just try to make it as entertaining as possible. The stories you tell don’t have to be scary stories, but scary would be perfect for the dark that is surrounding everyone. If you happen to have someone in your family who has had a lot of interesting experiences, by all means, have them tell stories of their past. You might even learn something about that person you never knew before. You don’t have to have a campfire to enjoy a good story.

You can play games that don’t require light or power. There are a variety of different games you can play while sitting in the dark. If your family is anything like mine, you all know a lot of random information. Quiz each other. Play trivia games without having to have those cards in front of you. If you have children who are studying multiplication, by all means quiz them on that. You can make it educational. If you have people in your family that love music, play Name that Tune. Hopefully, you won’t have anyone that is too tone deaf in the family. Even if you do, try it anyways. If you aren’t afraid of a stubbed toe or two, play Hide and Go Seek. Try to be as careful as possible and not run head first into a door or anything. There’s really nothing like a good game to make the time pass quickly.

Making Shadow Puppets is a great way to entertain smaller children, if you have them. You can use the light of a candle or a flashlight to assist you with this. Just be careful if you use a candle and don’t get too close to the flame. Smaller children will love to run up to the wall the shadows are appearing and try to touch the bunny or dog you are making.

If your family is lucky enough to have a laptop and the battery is charged, you can do a number of different things to stay entertained. You probably won’t have access to the internet, but you can play pre-installed games. The best thing you can do to insure that everyone is getting a piece of the action is to play a movie on your laptop given that you have a DVD player installed.

Some people think that when you’re experiencing a power outage, you are stuck sitting quietly in the dark being bored. It doesn’t have to be boring and you can use this time to bond with your family or friends or whomever else happens to be stuck in the dark with you. If you keep entertained during a power outage, the time will pass very quickly and before you know it, you will have the lights back on.
