How to Make Your Own Household Cleaners

It is very cheap and simple to make your own household cleaners. All you need is a few ingredients and you are on your way to making safer and less costly cleaners.

I make an all purpose cleaner, a window/glass cleaner, floor cleaner, furniture polish, toilet bowl cleaner, drain cleaner and oven cleaner. A main ingredient I use is white distilled vinegar, which is a safe non-toxic cleaner that kills most molds, bacteria and germs due to its high acidity. Baking soda is also an excellent, safe product that has many uses.

To make your own all purpose cleaner you need a spray bottle, white vinegar, liquid ivory dish soap, and hot water. Fill the spray bottle half full with vinegar, half full of hot water, and add about 4 drops of ivory dish soap. Shake this well and store anywhere you’d like. You can use this spray on any surface.

To make your glass cleaner you will need white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and hot water. Fill a spray bottle half full with vinegar, add 1 tbsp of alcohol, and fill the rest with hot water. Shake well and store as you like. I use newspapers to clean glass with because it leaves a streak-free shine.

To make the floor cleaner, simply mix half a cup of vinegar with one gallon of hot water. This will make those floors shine!

For furniture polish you need to mix one cup vegetable oil with a half a cup of lemon juice. Put this in a spray bottle and make sure to shake before each use.

Most oven cleaners are very rough and have a harsh smell. This version is so easy to make and is not as rough as commercial oven cleaners. Mix ¼ cup of ammonia with 2 cups of warm water. Spray into a warm oven and leave overnight. All you need to do is wipe down the next morning!

Baking soda can be used in place of Comet for cleaning sinks, tubs, and toilets. For my toilet bowls I spray straight white distilled vinegar in the bowl and then sprinkle with baking soda. Let sit a few minutes and scrub. The baking soda not only cleans, but deodorizes. You can also sprinkle baking soda down a drain, follow by pouring a cup of vinegar, let sit a few minutes and rinse with hot water. This process unclogs and deodorizes your drains.
