How to Mount Ceiling Tiles Over Popcorn Ceiling

If you have been thinking of replacing your popcorn ceiling, but dread removing it, think about covering it with ceiling tiles. By mounting the ceiling tiles directly over the popcorn ceiling, you can avoid the scraping and dust that comes with traditional ceiling finish methods.

Before beginning this project, pick out some lightweight ceiling tiles for the project. Keep in mind that the type of tiles you chose will affect the quality of light in the room. Slightly reflective tiles will behave similarly to high gloss paint, magnifying the appearance of the light throughout the room. Matt panels will have the opposite affect, much like a flat paint.

You will also need a chalkline, putty knife, and adhesive to finish the project. Pick out adhesive that is specified for use with tiles, and buy it in bulk and in a bucket.

Keep in mind that in order to reach the ceiling you will need to use a ladder. Using a ladder to apply panels can be difficult work that puts a strain on the body. Although this project can easily be completed in a single afternoon, you might want to spread the project over two days if you are working in a large room.

The true benefit of this technique is the fact that is requires almost no prep work to begin. Snap a chalkline that bisects the ceiling and will act as a guide for the installation. Snap another chalkline that is perpendicular to the first line. These markings give you the location of the first panels.

To begin to mount the ceiling tiles, apply a liberal amount of adhesive to the back of the panel with a putty knife. The adhesive should be at least as thick as the range of depth in the popcorn ceiling, ensuring a good fit.

Next press the tile into place, holding it for a second and waiting for the bond to hold. You can then apply the next tile. Continue applying tiles until the entire ceiling is covered. For areas that require a partial panel, you should be able to score the back and then break the tile.

When you reach the edge of the ceiling you can leave it unfinished or attach some type of molding to cover the seam. If you do apply molding, be sure to attach it to the wall studs and do not attempt to nail through the ceiling tiles.

Applying these ceiling tiles is a simple do it yourself project, but only if you are comfortable on a ladder and your ceiling is in relatively good repair. Otherwise, you can call a handyman to complete this project for you.
