How to Utilize Space in a Small Kitchen

When you are short on space in the kitchen, utensils, cookbooks and other kitchen essentials can make a small kitchen look cluttered and even smaller than it really is. But when you only have a small area to work with, how can you make the most of limited space in a small kitchen?

Wall Space

Kitchen counters in small kitchens do not usually offer a lot of room, which is why making more use of kitchen walls for storage purposes can free up much-needed counter space and allow you to display more items such as a spice rack, and cooking utensils. Make use of a magnetic strip on the wall for items such as knives. But when using a magnetic strip to display knives or other kitchen utensils, make sure that the magnetic strip is strong enough to hold the weight of the items and that it is kept well out of reach of young children.

Ceiling Hooks

Small kitchens do not have as much storage space or cabinetry as more spacious kitchens, which is why you need to be more resourceful in finding room for bulky items, such as pots and pans. If you have a large collection of bulky pots and pans that you received as a wedding present, but they are still stored in the garage, take them out and display them with pride in your kitchen. A line of kitchen hooks placed close to the ceiling will add extra storage space for pots and pans, while adding a unique, decorative touch to the kitchen.

Storage Above Kitchen Cabinets

If you have used every spare piece of wall space available in your kitchen and you cannot add any further ceiling hooks in your kitchen, you do not have to look much further for storage space in your small kitchen. Many people overlook the most obvious storage space in their kitchen and that is the area just above kitchen cabinets. If you have many kitchen utensils that are rarely used, storing them in a cramped heap on kitchen counters will only tie up much-needed space for other items that are used more often. Utensils that are rarely used can be stored above kitchen cabinets. Bulky items can be pushed back so that they are not clearly visible while decorative items, such as a china set, can be displayed closer to the front of the kitchen cabinets.

Making the most of storage areas in a small kitchen can help you to make the most of the space you do have available, while relegating items that are rarely used to the wall, ceiling or above the kitchen cabinets.
