Make a Hassle-free Long Distance Move!

Terrified of moving a long way from home? I’ve made several of these moves. The first few caused me some grief, but the last ones were easy. The difference? I got smart and planned ahead. Let me share some of my ideas so you won’t have to go through the same trials and error that I did.

If you want to do everything yourself:

  1. Make a checklist, pay attention to the details and your relocation will be practically effortless. If you decide on the do-it-yourself method, you’ll be responsible to rent a truck or trailer, pack the items and return the vehicle or trailer once you arrive at your destination. In most instances if you pick the truck or trailer up by closing time, the company allows you extra time to return it. For example, I rented a truck on a Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. and didn’t have to bring it back until Sunday morning. This gives you more time to travel and pack/unpack.
  2. There are many reputable rental companies available. Look in the telephone book under “Moving” or online at popular sites like U-Haul or Budget Rentals to get price quotes and find the proper equipment. I would like to offer you a favorite here but I have used most do-it-yourself companies, and I always go with the one who gives me the best deal.
  3. Big moving companies offer supplies to make your job efficient and easy. The sites display calculators to help you decide which type of vehicle or trailer you need. They also offer a full line of packing supplies, blankets and boxes. If you prefer to speak to a live person, there are telephone numbers available on the website or you can visit a local franchise. I cannot stress enough the importance of calculating your truck or trailer needs correctly. Doing this right will save you a lot of grief. I always figure “bigger is better” and I still seem to need “just a little” more room. Why pay for space you don’t need? It’s a delicate balance, but your franchise representative can help you decide.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for discounts. I always use the “senior” tactic and I usually get a percentage off. I also inquire about AAA, Internet, and other discounts. A lot of retailers will honor these.

Or if you need someone else to do the work:

  1. Perhaps you have a lot of furniture and possessions and decide to hire a moving company. This type of move will be more expensive and take research, but it can save you a lot of time and headache. If you decide to go with a company that specializes in doing the event for you, do your homework.
  2. Check with the Better Business Bureau. Ask for references and use the Internet to see if there have been issues with company policies.
  3. Ask pertinent questions such as “Do I need to pre-pack my items?”
  4. If the business offers the entire long distance moving experience, ask exactly what is included. Question whether any additional charges may be added for things such as packing supplies.
  5. Be sure the mover guarantees your household goods to be delivered on or by the date you select and get everything in writing.

Relocating to another place can be satisfying and fun if you take the time to plan ahead. Relax and enjoy the trip!
