Monmouth, Maine Local Travel Information Guide

Monmouth is a town in the Kennebec county of central Maine. It has a population of approximately four-thousand people. Several lakes are located in Monmouth and the surrounding area. There are a number of stores and restaurants, along with a variety of other establishments.

Stores in Monmouth include Leone’s Pizza, Monmouth Market, and Monmouth Kwik Shop. In addition to pizza, Leone’s Pizza offers some grocery items and alcoholic beverages. Monmouth Market sells soda, coffee, pizza, potato chips, and other items. The last time I went there it also had a kayak for sale in the store. In addition to convenience items, the Kwik Shop also has gas pumps. There is a closed restaurant, formerly Rhonda’s Grill, with a sign reading “Rainforest Restaurant, Coming in July (2006).” There is also a florist, fabric shop and a movie rental store.

There is a large, impressive-looking building called Cumston Hall which houses a theater and library. Voting in local elections also occurs there. It has food and drink stands outside which appear to be open seasonally. Cumston Hall is open Monday-Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. It has public bathrooms available as well. The only lodging available in Monmouth is the Rise & Shine Bed and Breakfast, which has eight bedrooms with separate bathrooms. Rates are discounted during part of the year and are also reduced for those staying a longer period of time. More information is available at its website, riseandshinebb.com. Additional attractions such as a public boat access (near the B&B) and fairground can be found in Monmouth as well.

Other establishments include a post office, a church, a school, police and fire stations, a newer town office, a railroad museum, and a medical center. A credit union and bank are located in Monmouth, both of which have an ATM. A freight railroad also runs through the town.

The free Community Advertiser newspaper, which is based in Farmingdale, covers local news on Monmouth and other neighboring towns. The more well-known Kennebec Journal newspaper is available at the Monmouth Market, among other locations. Area radio stations include FM-104.3 (music) and AM-1280 (sports).

The larger nearby town of Winthrop offers a greater variety of dining and lodging. Maine’s capitol, Augusta, is not very distant from Monmouth. Other area towns include Manchester, Readfield, and Fayette.
