The Mystery of Merz Apothecary in the Windy City

Merz Apothecary has moved some of its unique treasures to Marshall Field’s flagship store on State Street. On a recent trip, the counter manager told me that they also opened a smaller outpost at Christmas at the Marshall Field’s location on Michigan Avenue. No word yet on if they will be doing that in 2006.

No worries, northsiders, the original (since 1875) store located in Lincoln Square at 4716 N Lincoln Ave. remains chock full of soaps, perfumes, lip salves, candles, face and body cleansers and moisturizers, vitamins, and products for men and children, just to name a few. As a bonus, any of the pharmacists would be more than happy to recommend or even whip up a herbal remedy for whatever ails you.

Many of the products are imported form other countries, which adds just a bit of mystery and prestige to them. The salespeople are very knowledgeable on all the brands that Merz carries. A few of the products that I have purchased there and am currently loving are cult favorite Smith’s Rosebud Salve, Pre de Provence Milk Soap- great for sensitive skin, Korres Shea Butter & Vitamins Nourishing Hair Mask, and Alba Very Emollient Body Lotion. You can also check out their amazing website at www.smallflower.com but I think you need to go there for true warm and fuzzy old fashioned apothecary experience.
