Movie Theaters in Tallahassee

Tallahassee is home to so many things you can do, but movies are always a popular option. With such a diverse population of the city – from Film students and politicians to retirees and preschoolers, you may want to spend a bit of time considering the theatre options. Each theatre in Tallahassee offers a very different moviegoing experience.

Possibly the most popular option, at least among the college and high school age groups, is the AMC 20 at Tallahassee Mall; 2415 N. Monroe St. This theatre does, as advertised, offer 20 screens. It’s also located in a mall, so you’ve got entertainment for before or after your showing. One of the perks: The theatre allows outside food and beverage from the mall inside! However, a recent change has been in the pricing of movies – student tickets, once only $6 for nighttime showings, has been elevated to $7 for Friday and Saturday night shows.

The second-largest first-run theatre in town is located just outside the Governor’s Square Mall, and is aptly titled the Governor’s Square Stadium 12; 1501 Governor’s Square Blvd. It offers a lot of character, but the theatres themselves aren’t as new and updated as those at the AMC. Funky paintings inside make for an entertaining lobby, but old seats just aren’t as plush and comfortable for a two-hour stay.

Interested in highbrow or hard-to-find movies? What about foreign films, documentaries, and indie flicks? If any of these describe your tastes, plan to spend your time at the Miracle 5 Theater. However, the only “miracle” here may be that the theatre is still in business. As old as the Governor’s Square, this 5-screen theatre offers more art films than anything else, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a theatre with filled seats, unless, of course, both the AMC and Governor’s Square theatres somehow miss an important movie, like they did for Tarantino’s blockbuster Kill Bill, Vol. 1!

Of course, those who don’t care so much about being the first on their block to see a movie might enjoy the Interstate Theatres Movies 8, formerly the Cinemark Movies 8; 2810 Sharer Road. This theatre offers discounted tickets, including $0.50 matinees. It also hosts the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show showing in October.

The Challenger Learning Center IMAX (200 South Duval St.) is located downtown, and features only a few movies at a time, but does get big-name movies that are also released on IMAX. However, most students stay away except for special movies, as tickets run twice the price of a regular movie. Still, if you’re looking for an experience, IMAX movies always deliver and offer something a little different for your money.

So, if you’re looking for a great place to go on a date, the movies are still a solid bet. But choose wisely, there are many theatre options in Tallahassee, and which theatre you choose may say a lot about you.
