New Brunswick: Tips for Finding an Off Campus Apartment at Rutgers University

So searching for an aparment can be frustrating, especially when you don’t know where to start. So first try to figure out where exactly you want to live and where you do not. It is no secret that New Brunswick is not the safest city so make sure you take into consideration how far it is from campus espically if you ladies have to walk back from class a night. While you may find a bigger apartment with a better price the further from College Ave you stray if it seems a little too far for you don’t try to make it work, pass on it and keep looking because you can not put a price on your saftey.

Next comes the more frustrating part of the off campus adventure…your roomates. While everyone may seem gung ho about living together in September come December they maybe singing a different tune. Don’t get too discourged though, your new roomate maybe just under your nose. The best thing to do is to get the word out, tell your other friends, their boyfriends and girlfriends, that your looking roomates, rember other people are in the same situation you are. Once you find the roomates of your dreams everyone should sit down and decide how much they are willing to pay for rent, and once you reach a concensus that apartment hunting shall begin.

Once you have your part of town picked out take a walk around, come winter you will notice practically every house around school will have a for rent sign in the window. So use your cold calling skills to check out the prices of some of your favorite places. Another good way to find an apartment espcially for those who have waited until the last minute or have had a little roommate drama is by good old fashioned word of mouth. My roomates found our house, right behind the student center because a friend of our’s friends grandpa owned a bunch of houses here in New Brunswick. If your house hunting hasn’t been working out an apartment could be a better and often less expensive alternative. In New Brunswick there are several aparment complex’s competitvley priced with deals like free internet access for students.

In the end you will find something, and while it may not be your ideal place, it doesn’t really matter because it will look like a disaster area after your first weekend of drinking anyway. Happy Hunting 🙂
