Painted Striped Walls with a New Twist

We’ve all seen the striped paint jobs, done by professionals, where they use masking tape to separate stripes and keep them perfectly aligned. There’s a much different striping technique that’s not near the trouble and will end up not looking striped at all! Instead, your walls will have a combination of colors and textures that will give your home a masterful make-over.

New and unique painting techniques are constantly being discovered – some of them might be right for your home, some may not – but when considering a paint job it helps to choose something that’s easy to do and will give the room a look you love.

Paint is so much less expensive than other wall coverings so it’s an obvious choice for many people. But why settle for an ordinary paint job when you can have an extraordinary new look for your walls? It’s easy to do when you purchase three different colors of paint and stripe the walls.

Choose a light color for the first stripe of the room, then a medium color, and finally a dark color. The colors should be similar and look good together. An example: white, light blue, and a darker blue color. Put the paint on the walls in a horizontal pattern, covering a third of the wall with each color.

Do small sections of the wall at a time because the technique must be completed while the paint is still wet. After putting a stripe of each paint color on the wall, take a clean roller and begin rolling the middle color into the top color, and the bottom color upwards into the medium color.
Roll randomly, without making any particular pattern, and continue doing so until you can see quite a bit of the medium color mixed into the top color, and quite a lot of the darkest color mixed into the center color.

If you use the paint thickly, you’ll likely get ridges and peaks from the roller – these are okay, and as a matter of fact, lend dimension and interest to the wall. After completing one section of the wall, move on to the next section, and continue in this pattern until the entire wall is complete. Since the look is eye-catching and bright, it might be a little too much for more than one or two walls.

Plan on using quite a few roller heads for the striped wall project. If you can purchase inexpensive ones in packs, all the better, since it will take many: you’ll need one for each separate color, then two more to blend the light with the medium, and the medium with the dark colors.

Any three colors will do for the striped wall project but try to stick with a very light color for the first stripe, then progress with darker shades – but not too dark – on the second and third stripes.

A mixture of white, blue, and dark blue gives a wall the look of a vast sea; cream, beige and brown mixed together gives a smoky mountain-type effect. The look is unique, beautiful and adds interest to the entire room. It’s a great look for almost any room of the house, too. Paint one wall in a small room, two walls in a larger room. The method is a little more time consuming than an ordinary paint job, but easy to accomplish and worth the investment.
