Review of OXY Scotchguard Spot and Stain Remover for Carpets

A few months ago I was burning a lavender scented soy based candle on my livingroom coffee table. When I vacuumed the rugs, my vacuum cord caught on the candle, knocking it to the floor. Unfortunately, the soy had become quite liquid, and the melted contents splashed all over my cream colored carpeting. I was heart sick, but vowed to get those stains out.

I tried three different carpet cleaners, to no avail. I even used my steam cleaner on the area. The spots seemed to have disappeared, only to reappear a week later. I called the company who made the candle, and they said the spots should come right up with hot water and laundry detergent. That didn’t work either.

Then it dawned on me that maybe the spots were reappearing because the soy was still deep into the carpeting fibers, and dirt was sticking to it, thus making more stains. That’s when I decided to look for a carpet cleaner that contained Scotchguard, hoping that it would help the carpet remain cleaner for a longer period of time. Enter Scotchguard OXY.

About OXY

Scotchguard OXY comes in a cobalt blue colored plastic bottle. It has the tapered top with a sprayer nozzle, and is comfortable to hold. The nozzle has three settings: spray, stream and off. The label boasts that OXY is the only 2-in-1 Oxy Carpet Cleaner with built in Scotchguard Protector. It claims that it will help clean away the toughest spots and keep them from reappearing. It also neutralizes odors.

The cleaner does have a scent, but it’s not overpowering or offensive to my sinus’s. The product claims to leave a pleasant, light fragrance. It’s light, but I wouldn’t really call it pleasant. But then I have yet to smell a pleasant scented carpet cleaner.

It will work on: juice stains, coffee, red wine, tomato and meat sauce, beef gravy, pet urine, dirt & grease stains, and much more. It’s safe for colorfast carpeting including wool, nylon and stain-resistant carpet.

How To Use

Vacuum carpet area first, and test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area. Spray on soiled area, and wait 3-5 minutes to let the solution absorb in and start to work. Work from outside of spot and blot or lightly rub area. Rinse with clean water and reapply if needed. Set in stains may require more than one treatment.

How It Worked For Me

This carpet cleaner is a life saver. The spots came out, and they have stayed out! I really think the scotchguard was the key! It is the main difference between this cleaner and the other brands I used.

Once my carpet was dry, I vacuumed it, and the spots were gone. It did not leave any sticky residue on my carpet, it felt nice and soft to the touch. Since the fine spray doesn’t get my carpeting “wet”, it only took an hour for them to dry, and soon we could walk on them again. The spray didn’t make any foam while using it, and it was easier to spread around than foam cleaners, in my opinion.

Bottom line, this $6 bottle of Scotchguard OXY saved my carpets, and my wallet.

It contains 2-butoxyethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and surfactants.
