The Top 5 Chick Flicks: Romantic Comedies

My favorite movie genre would have to be romantic comedies. I have seen several great romantic comedies over the years, but there are 5 that are by far the best, in my opinion.

  1. While You Were Sleeping (1995) is a story about a woman, named Lucy (Sandra Bullock), who finds herself telling one lie right after another to avoid hurting the family she wishes she was part of. It all starts out with a guy she is attracted to getting knocked out and her saving his life. Afterwards, she goes to the hospital and the nurse thinks she is engaged to the man and ends up telling the guys family. Of course she isn’t engaged to Peter (Peter Gallagher), she hasn’t even spoke to him before. But she finds it hard to tell the truth and break the hearts of a family she has grown to love. Comedy ensues when Lucy starts to fall for Peter’s brother, Jack (Bill Pullman). All while Peter remains in a coma, but when he wakes up, everyone thinks he has amnesia because he can’t remember Lucy and things only get worse when an adopted family member named Saul (Jack Warden) has a little chat with Peter. Bill Pullman really makes this romantic comedy unforgettable. The relationship that forms between Jack and Lucy makes you feel lucky to have that special someone in your life or makes you long for a special someone, if you are single.
  2. Bridget Jones Diary (2001) is the classic story of a girl (RenÃ?©e Zellweger) who finds herself single after yet another year. Her mother is constantly trying to set her up with all these horrible men and she isn’t doing much better finding someone on her own until she finds out her boss (Hugh Grant) is interested in her. Later in the movie, after getting a severe broken heart, Bridget starts to keep a dairy to help her improve her life. She also finds love in the most unexpected person. Colin Firth is absolutely gorgeous in this movie and the character he plays makes you fall head over heels. Hugh Grant is also quite sexy in this famous romantic comedy. But the best part of this film is the fight scene towards the end. Watching two guys fight is really sexy, or at least it is in this film.
  3. Bridget Jones Edge of Reason (2004) Bridget finally has her man, but can she keep him? In this hilarious romantic comedy Bridget Jones is in the perfect relationship, but is it too good to be true? She is constantly accusing her partner of cheating on her, but is he? Bridget again has to look at her life and again is faced with having to work with her attractive ex-boss, Hugh Grant. Will she fall for him again or will she remain faithful to a partner she’s not even sure she still has? Again, there is a great fight scene that is so hot. This time it’s a man fighting for the wrongdoings done to his woman.
  4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) is the classic story of an ugly duckling that changes her life for the better. Toula (Nia Vardalos) begins taking classes at the local college and leaves the family restaurant to work at the family travel agency. While working there she runs into a customer she served while in her ugly duckling stage. At first, Ian (John Corbet), doesn’t recognize her, but after going out on a date he realizes who she is. He begins to fall head over heels for her, but she tells him that it just won’t work because her family is Greek and he isn’t. But Ian is persistent and when he asks her to marry him, she realizes she must tell her family. Her father is devastated because Ian isn’t Greek and his daughter wants to marry him. After finally agreeing, the movie truly turns funny as Ian’s parents meet Toula’s parents. Ian’s parents are uptight, while Toula’s parents’ Greek ways seem slightly odd. Could a union between two very different cultures really work? This romantic comedy works because I think we’ve all been in a relationship and had our parents do something embarrassing. Plus it’s the classic story of forbidden love, with a bit of comedy thrown in.
  5. Monster-in-Law (2005) Charlie (Jennifer Lopez) has found the perfect man (Michael Vartan), but along with him comes the mother (Jane Fonda) from the under world. Kevin’s mother, Viola, is determined to keep Charlie away from her son. She has just lost her job and she refuses to lose the only family she has left, so she begins to put Charlie through the ringers thinking she will easily tear them apart. When Charlie figures out what is going on, she decides to give Viola a taste of her own medicine. This is a great romantic comedy for those who have married or even dated a guy whose mother is unbearable. It lets us live out all the things we wish we could do to our mother-in-laws (or soon to be mother-in-laws).
