Tips for a Sweeter Smelling Home

Imagine this: The doorbell rings. You realize you have unexpected guests but your house smells like wet dog, kitty litter, and gym shoes. What do you do? We have all be in this situation. Although most people know to alert you of a visit, some decide to stop over unannounced. Although I cannot help you with your organization and cleaning needs in your house, I can help you with your odor problems. There are a few simple things you can do to rid of odors and make your home a sweet smelling abode.

Freshen the Kitchen
There are many smells from a kitchen that can be pleasant: cookies, stew, gravy, etc. However, there are many smells from a kitchen that can leave your nose begging for forgiveness: old garbage, onions, old take-out food, etc. There is an easy way to rid of these unwanted odors. Take an unpeeled orange and poke whole cloves into it’s skin. Do this all round the orange. Then tie ribbon around the orange with loops long enough to hang on your cabinet or pantry doors.

Rid of Closet odor
Closets are notorious for their smells. They contain fabrics of all ages, dirty laundry, and worn shoes. A great way to get rid of the odor in the closet is to take a regular 9 X 13 pan from your kitchen. Then dump a single layer of charcoal briquettes into the pan. The charcoal will absorb the odor and the moisture that creates much of the odor in your closet. In order to maintain the fresh smell, change the briquettes every month or so.

Whole House Scent
One of the easiest ways to eliminate odor throughout the entire house is with your vacuum cleaner. It is quite simple. Merely, drop a couple drops of lemon juice into the vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum the whole house. This will deposit a scent no one will forget.

Homemade air spray
There are several commercial products that claim to reduce odors in your home. However, sometimes these sprays are overbearing on the nose. To create your own homemade air spray, take 8 ounces of water and about 10 drops of essential oil. Put this combination into a cheap spray bottle. Not only will the essential oils smell great, but they will also kill any bacteria that is airborne. Homemade air spray is much cheaper and more effective than any store bought brand.

Your home should be a place you look forward to relaxing in every day. A house that smells unpleasant will not conjure up positive emotions for anyone. Using these simple remedies, your home will smell fresher and sweeter to you and your guests.
