There are a lot of stores offering “dorm gear” this time of year. Some of it is great some of it is horrible just remember if its being sold at a major national store many of your fellow students are going to have it. Its not going to be unique, its going to be trendy and trends go out of style. The “dorm guides” aren’t necessarily completely evil you can take the suggestions and suggested products and modify them or get them at other stores in slightly different styles and colors. An example is the traditional shower caddy, it is a good thing to have but a mesh wire one will look a lot better and be more unique then one of the brightly colored plastic ones.

As a great alternative to posters try smaller framed prints, or photos in 8×10’s 11×14’s, they are classier and sofisisticated even if the photo or print is not. A lot of student photographers and aspiring photographers sell their prints through their myspace.com pages; they usually have very creative and unique images for cheap prices. If not take your favorite vacation prints to your local camera store or ever walmart and have larger prints made. If this isn’t satisfying for you and you MUST have posters, frame them, they will last longer, look better, be easier to transport and wont rune the walls. Another great idea to decorate the walls is by using tapestries; they are unique and cheap.

Another way to decorate a wall is to use retro like or actual retro metal signs, stores like bed bath and beyond, home goods, marshals and tj max carry them, the key is to shop around. The signs usually run between $5 and $20 and will last for years to come.

In addition to wall dÃ?©cor accessories can spice up any dorm room. A good place to find cheap, nice and not so kid like accessories is Ikea, yes Ikea isn’t just for furniture they have an awesome selection of wall dÃ?©cor, table dÃ?©cor, picture frames, flower vases, fake plants, end tables, desks, chairs, bed linens and so on. If there isn’t an Ikea close by to their school a lot of times people sell products on eBay or on craigslist.com. Speaking of craigslist, you can find amazing deals on all sorts of stuff from the latest electronics to couches.

The bottom line when decorating a dorm room is to work with what you like, what you’ve got and what you can get. Little things like a picture from you last family trip to Florida blown up in size will go along way. Remember it doesn’t have to be expensive or trendy to be super cool.
