Walton Hall Hotel in Warwickshire, England – Hotel Review

A few years ago we stayed at Walton Hall, Wellesbourne, when visiting England. It is in the beautiful Cotswolds area close to Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick.

We have been planning on going back there and are fortunate to be going the week commencing September 1st. On our last visit we had a one bedroom, one bathroom unit but this time we have booked a 2 bedroom, 2-bathroom unit that sleeps 6 people. This way my daughter, her husband, and the 2 granddaughters can stay with us.

Walton Hall looks like a stately home and last time we got to meet Sir Richard and his lady. The property is a hotel/timeshare/Country Club set in 65 acres of beautiful landscaping. The Victorian architect, Sir Gilbert Scott, built it. The property has the main building but we stayed in one of the apartments in the grounds. There are 2 restaurants, and a bar in main building. We tried to eat in one of them but it was closed at the time.

There is a beautiful long drive up to Walton Hall and looking at it for the first time you are aware of this grand old home with loads of chimneys.

The check in was really professional and the counter clerk was very articulate and extremely helpful. We were told to drive back to the apartments and we were on the first floor , which is the second floor here in the states.

Our accommodation was a good size for English standards. They were upgrading all the rooms in our building but unfortunately hadn’t got to ours. Be aware we had to walk up the wide staircase as there were no elevators/lifts.

The entrance hall in the apartment was big and had doors leading to the living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The kitchen was to the side of the living room.

The living room had a two seater sofa that converted into a pull out bed. There was a dining table, chairs, a sideboard, plenty of cutlery, and a china cabinet. We saw the new sofas being put in other rooms and we disappointed that our one was broken. We did report it, but as it wasn’t being used as a bed, we didn’t want the upheaval of the delivery guys spoiling our time with the kids.

Our bedroom had a full size bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables, lamps, and a telephone.

The bathroom looked old and really needed the upgrading but everything worked fine.

The kitchen was tiny by American standards but was adequate for our needs. We had a full size stove, a waist high fridge with a tiny freezer drawer on the top. There were all the appliances we needed including toaster, coffee maker, kettle, etc.

The one thing that lacked was no washer or dryer. The laundry room was in the center of a courtyard. I had to go into a small stone built room. All the washing machines were being used. No one was around to help me so I hunted for a member of staff. When I finally found one, I was told that they had to use them for all the towels from the Leisure center. I was not amused.

The Leisure Center was located just to the rear of our apartment. We purchased guest passes for all the family at 5 pounds a person ($10.08). I am sure it will be more on this visit.

In the leisure center was a heated swimming pool, sauna, stream room, Jacuzzi, and a really good air condition gym.

Outside in the screened and gated area was another heated pool. You had to go through the leisure center to get to it.

There were tennis and golf coaches on site to give lessons. My son-in-law and I had to have archery lessons, which was a lot of fun. You could go fishing and horse riding too. We had the miniature golf course opposite our apartment, which we so enjoyed.

Also from time to time hot air balloons landed. I can’t remember the exact price, but you could take a ride if you wished. We watched this several times and were really impressive.

The hotel rooms started at around 100 pounds ($208) per night and increased depending on the size of the room or suite and the view. I will be interested this year to see how much they are. There is also seventeen and a half % V.A.T. added to the check.
