How to Clean a Football Helmet

Helmets worn by football players often become very dirty and need to be cleaned. Cleaning a football helmet should be a very easy task, as long as you approach it in the correct manner. Be as thorough as possible when cleaning a football helmet because apart from dirt and debris on the outside of the helmet, you would need to get rid of bacteria and other germs sitting on the inside of the helmet.

Things Required:

– Several clean cloths
– Warm, soapy water
– Clean towel
– Bottle of food-grade hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)
– Scrubbing brush or old toothbrush
– Bucket
– Glass bowl

Instructions

  • 1

Vigorously shake the football helmet to get rid of loose mud, dirt or debris that might be clinging onto the helmet. This will make the steps to come a lot easier for you.

  • 2

Some loose debris might still be clinging onto the helmet which should be removed properly by wiping the helmet with a clean, dry cloth. Once that has been accomplished, move on to the next step.

  • 3

Stubborn stains from mud that might have dried on the helmet are difficult to get rid of. Prepare a mixture of quality soap and luke warm water in a small bucket. Completely immerse a soapy clean piece of cloth in the soap-water mixture and wring it to make excess soapy water fall back into the bucket. Wipe clean the helmet with the damp piece of cloth.

  • 4

Use a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to scrub and thus clean the helmet scuffmarks. Some of the scuffmarks are very difficult to remove. For such marks, you will have to apply a fairly large magnitude of pressure onto the brush you are using.

  • 5

Completely dry the helmet with a clean towel. Do not let the helmet dry on its own because harsh watermarks may develop on the helmet and you would be facing a whole different problem.

  • 6

Pour a small quantity of food-grade hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) into a glass bowl. Moisten a piece of clean cloth in the aforesaid liquid. Wipe clean all parts of the helmets with the cloth. Hydrogen peroxide will disinfect the helmet by killing most of the germs. Be sure to wipe clean the helmet from both inside and outside.

  • 7

Allow time for the helmet to dry. Make sure you do not try to speed up the drying part by placing the helmet in open sun.
