Meat pies are a great snack at tea time and perfect for serving on parties. Many of us rely on the store bought frozen versions of this and just bake them when they are to be served. You can make your very own meat pie pastry from scratch; it will be more delicious and will cost you less than the readymade versions. Give this recipe a try and you won’t be disappointed.
Ingredients
  • Flour - 450 g
  • Baking powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt - 1 tsp

Instructions
  1. Prepare the pastry dough so that it can rest while you do the other work.
  2. Take a mixing bowl and combine baking powder, salt and flour in it.
  3. Cut lard in large square chunks.
  4. Use your hands to rub the lard in the flour mixture.
  5. Start adding the chilled water slowly and keep mixing. The dough should not stick to your fingers.
  6. After the dough is formed, cover it with a towel and put it aside for an hour.
  7. To prepare the meat mixture, take a large pan and add stock cube, olive oil and red wine.
  8. Put in the chopped green pepper and onions.
  9. Sautee them till they are soft.
  10. Add garlic, paprika, cumin, chili powder and more wine.
  11. Cook till the meat is slightly browned and done.
  12. Set the mixture aside to cool when it is done. Do not add it warm as the pastry dough might get destroyed.
  13. After the dough and the mixture are ready, start to assemble the pies.
  14. Roll the dough to ¼ inch thickness.
  15. With a round glass, cut circles from the dough.
  16. Place 1 tablespoon of the meat on each circle in the middle.
  17. Fold it over the meet so that a semi circle forms.
  18. Seal the pie by pressing it with fingers along the edges.
  19. Coat the pies with eggs after they are sealed.
  20. Repeat this for all pies.
  21. Place the pies on a baking tray and bake for 35 to 45 minutes at 180-200 degrees.
  22. The pies should be golden brown in colour.
