How to Set the Twist in Yarn

If you are spinning yarn at home, remember that you will need to set the twist in it when it has been completely spun. This practice will prevent the yarn from unraveling when you take the yarn off of the spinning mechanism you are using. Setting the twist in yarn and allowing it to dry are perhaps two of the most important steps towards ensuring that the yarn can be effectively used in your next craft project.

Things Required:

– Bathtub or Sink
– Hanger

Instructions

  • 1

Wind the spun yarn into a skein after removing it from the drop spindle or spinning wheel. To prevent the yarn from getting tangled while the twist is being set in it, be sure to secure it properly.

  • 2

Add lukewarm water to a sink or bathtub. The quantity of water you add should be enough to completely cover the yarn.

  • 3

Place the yarn in the water as you will have to gently push it down so that it can soak and thus stay at the bottom of the container. Leave the yarn immersed in water for about 5 to 10 minutes. Check if the yarn is completely saturated in water. If not, immerse it again and allow for more saturation time.

  • 4

Take out the yarn from the bathtub or sink. Get rid of the excess water by gently squeezing the yarn. To prevent the yarn fabric from felting, be sure not to wring the yarn.

  • 5

Place the yarn on a hanger so that it can dry out. The time required for the yarn to dry completely will depend on a number of factors such as the yarn’s total weight and prevailing climatic conditions.

  • 6

Allow time for the yarn to dry out completely before using it in another craft project.
