Automakers Give Apple A Nod As They Adopt Hands Free SIRI Navigation

Apple’s latest iOS6 with 3D Mapping and voice guided SIRI may be the key to the company breaking into the large auto industry. After the official unveiling of iOS6, the auto industry responded positively to Apple latest software and it’s potential.

The ball got rolling at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) where Apple introduced the new iOS6 and its many capabilities. One of the big pieces of news from the presentation of Apple’s updated operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch was the fact that Google Maps had been dropped and was being replaced by a new 3D mapping program from Apple. The mapping program also has turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic updates. This is all integrated into the voice-guided SIRI which will allow the user to utilize their phone by talking to it. Apple displayed all this wizardry along with a nifty “Eyes Free” feature which lets the driver speak to SIRI by simply tapping the driving wheel.

The cool features would place the Apple in Google Maps territory. Currently the Google product is the most used in the world and was the first choice of developers creating apps for the iPhone and other iOS products. Apples replacement will now be the default mapping feature and allow deeper integration. According to analysts, the potential for Apple’s hands free navigation system to replace existing car electronics and Google is high.

iPhone users can easily utilize the navigation system by plugging in the phone to a USB port in the car. This will give them the ability to press a button on the steering wheel and bring SIRI alive. From there a user can ask for directions by speaking to SIRI and not take their eyes off the road. They can also use their voice to dial contacts, write text messages and emails.

Apple has gotten a major boost from automakers after it was reported soon after WWDC that Honda, General Motors, and Toyota plan to make their upcoming models compatible with the new navigation system.
