Do You Care?

I was walking to the library today with a smile on my face. I usually do not have the time to visit the library. However, I finished early today at work and my boyfriend headed off for his job. As I was walking down a suburban neighborhood where traffic is always a dilemma, I noticed something laying in the middle of the road. I had only wished for it to not have been a living thing. I took one step, two steps, a couple of more steps and then I realized how wrong I was. The poor creature lay there with its body parts spread across the road. I started to cry because I always do when I see a life that’s been put to an end. It turned out to be a beautiful duck that I may have seen at our pond. I wanted to pick up the body and bury it somewhere far away from the deadly road.

As I slowed down my pace and cried even more, I turned back to see how ferociously fast the cars were passing by. One car didn’t even hesitate to go around the dead body, the ignorant fool ran over it. My aggravation started to escalate. I came to a defined conclusion in my life. This world does not care. If a human being is willing to run over a dead animal, then that person won’t mind running over a dead corpse. What is the difference? Size? At times I wonder about my kid’s generation. How much more of this ignorance can I take?

When I dwell into the future, I would like to stay in a peaceful and positive thinking mode, but everyday misfortunes keep me from staying happy. I don’t see the point in fighting for animal rights when some people can care less about them. I don’t see us breathing clean air for a very long time since our pollution rate is increasing dramatically every year. I also cannot understand the cures for cancer or any type of disease because more people are dying each day. My idea is not to have everyone think alike, but to listen to one another. Help each other when we are in need. This basic idea comes from the respect we should have for nature. Nature does not only include us, but it includes those who cannot speak the same language that we do. If we run over animals everyday and don’t even take the time to feel sorry for what we have done, then how do we expect this world to stay sane?
