How to Install Corrugated Roofing Panels

Installing a roof using corrugated roofing panels is an easy way for a homeowner to quickly cover a patio without the help of a contractor. Corrugated roofing panels are easy to install, especially when they are used for the simple roofs required for a patio or porch. If you are confident on a ladder and with using a few basic hand tools this is an easy job to complete in a single afternoon.

This tutorial assumes that you already have an arbor that can serve as the structural component of the corrugated roof. If this is not the case check the building codes in your area before constructing any type of structure. You may be required to get a building permit before beginning the project and you should definitely check the local building codes for any specific requirements your structure must meet.

Even if you have an existing arbor, some preparation must be completed before you can install the actual corrugated roofing panels. First, you must install blocking 24″ on center between all of the rafters. This can be a very long job: a nail gun will speed this part of the project considerably. Be sure to use galvanized nails to prevent rust.

With the blocking for the corrugated roofing panels installed, you can install the closure strips. These pieces support the corrugated roofing panels and are often made to snap together. To install, screw them on top of the blocking using galvanized screws. Most closure strips that are made for corrugated roofing panels link together so they have the correct spacing. Always start installing the closure strips from the same side and trim the last piece on the end to fit flush with the structure.

Next you should install the vertical closure strips for the corrugated roofing panels. These strips are installed directly on top of the rafters. They should fit between the horizontal closure strips and should also be attached with galvanized screws.

With the preparatory work complete you can install the corrugated roofing panels. Because the panels overlap, you should start at the end that is away from the house. Make sure that the end panel meets the edge of the fascia as well as the edge of the arbor.

Installing corrugated roofing panels require that you drill pilot holes before attaching each panel. The size of the hole depends on the manufacturer, although some companies recommend making a slightly larger hole than needed to accommodate thermal expansion. Most manufacturers recommend fastening the panels on every other rib to the closure strips below.

You may be tempted to use regular screws when installing corrugated roofing panels, but it is important to use corrugated roofing fasteners instead. These specially made fasteners have a rubber washer below the head to create a watertight seal around the hole in the corrugated roofing panels and are also galvanized so they won’t rust.

Anytime your panels must overlap, you should seal the ends with silicone caulk to prevent leaks. To use, apply a generous bead of caulk several inches from the end of the panel. Then put the other panel on top of the caulk, overlapping it to create a good seal.

When you reach the end of the roof, you may want to install some flashing to address the transition between the house and the roof of your new porch or deck. Plastic flashing is often a good choice and can last as long as the roof when installed properly.

Corrugated roofing panels are one of the easiest roofing products to use, but this does not mean that they are not hassle free. If you don’t have experience working on a ladder and using the skills required for the installation, consider calling a professional to install the corrugated roofing panels for you.
