Iron Gate Magazine Rack DIY Project

An Iron Gate is a great piece of recycled material to turn into a magazine rack that can either hang on your wall or lean on your wall. If you are looking for a magazine rack that will not take up a tone of space in you small condo or home, then I think you will really like this vintage looking home d©cor craft project.

The first step in making this Iron Gate Magazine Rack is to clean your iron gate. You can use some steel wool to sand off any rusty areas on the gate. Next, use a brush to brush off any dust.

Now, spray on a coat of primer. You will need to use a product like Rustoleum to help in the fight against future rust.

Once the rust fighting primer has dried spray on a coat of any spray paint you would like your Iron Gate Magazine Rack to look like. You can stick with a traditional black or go for a fun and whimsical color. Look for a hammered metal spray paint to add some texture. You can find it in black, silver, brown, and copper.

Once the paint has dried you are ready to hang your Iron Gate Magazine Rack. You have a few options.

The first option is the easiest. If you were lucky enough to find a wide piece of iron gate, then all you need to do is stand it on the ground on one end, creating rows of horizontal lines.

If you found a piece of iron gate only about three feet wide, then you could stand it on a desk to create some height.

Now, to hang your Iron Gate Magazine Rack you could use some curtain rod hardware. You will want to buy curtain hardware that the rungs of the Iron Gate easily rest in. You should buy four.

Now, hold your iron gate up on the wall and mark where the curtain hardware will need to be installed. Use wall anchors or find studs in the wall. The Iron Gate Magazine Rack will be heavy.

After the curtain hardware has been hung you can simply rest your iron gate in the hooks of the curtain hardware. If you are worried about small children who make want to climb, then use some sturdy ribbon or even twine to tie each of the four points resting on the curtain hardware to the metal hooks.

Finally, you can use some plumbing hardware to hang your Iron Gate Magazine Rack. Look for the simple metal brackets that are meant to hold pipes to the wall. They will look like a U shape and have holes for attaching to the wall on either end.
