Painting the Entire Inside of a House

When I first moved into my current home four years ago, I knew I had my work cut out for me. The kitchen was white and yellow with smudges and chips, paint peeling from the corners, and incomplete in other areas. The hallway still had sheetrock showing and had never been painted while the floor was just a sheet of plywood.

One bedroom had the original wallpaper from 20+ years ago while another was a very deep, dark blue with big spots where you just knew a child had been bored while slowly peeling it away.

The living room and master bedroom had been almost completed in teal and black. Teal walls and black trim in the living room, black walls and teal trim in the bedroom. Dark and “cave-like”, whoever began the project ran out of teal before finishing the living room and ran out of black before finishing the bedroom. Yep, my work was definitely cut out for me.

After clearing the cobwebs I actually mopped the walls and ceiling. I began wiping them down, moving a ladder from one place to another before taking out the sponge mop and mopping all those hard to reach places. This made the worst part of my job a breeze.

I chose a nice sky blue for the living room with a black cherry trim. I moved everything into the center of the room and used an old sheet to cover all the belongings. After painting the walls, ceiling, and trim, the room lightened up and seemed to awaken.

I went through the house one room at a time, choosing colors to bring each room back to life. But the most fun were my children’s rooms. I took them to buy paint and they had the opportunity to look at all the swatches until they found the color that would best signature them in their own individual way. With help from mom, my kids did a great job on their rooms.

I finished this enormous project by painting the hall floor with the remaining black cherry. The hallway seemed longer and wider with the light gray walls and dark floor. It’s amazing what a couple…well a few cans of paint can do for the inside of a house. By the end of a week, our house truly became a home. Fresh paint seems to make even the oldest and dirtiest (stained) look new and clean again.
