Towel Home Decor

Whether you’re working with ordinary towels, extra-thirsty towels, or even beach towels, you’ll have fun and make some impressive crafts when you choose one of these towel projects.

Make a bed set for any size bed by using towels that are equal in width. They don’t have to be the same thickness or the same color but must be the same width. Measure the width of the towel then cut the length to that measurement as well. This will give you “quilt blocks” for the project.

Cut the square from the center of the towel, using no ends of the towels. Measure the width and length of the bed to decide how many quilt blocks you’ll need altogether. You’ll need 4 uncut towels to make the pillowcases.

Sew the squares together until you have enough to cover the width of your bed. Count how many squares that is and put the towel squares in groups of that many. For example, if it takes 8 towel squares to go across the width of your bed, place towel squares in stacks of 8. Sew the stacked pieces together, side-by-side. Now sew a row of these to another row. Continue this pattern until all the towel pieces are sewn into rows, and all the rows are sewn together to form the quilt.

You can use lace or seam binding tape to stitch around the perimeter to give the quilt more of a finished look. Sew two towels together, around one small end and both long ends, to use for pillowcases. Or, cut extra squares and sew them together to make throw pillows.

For a baby’s room make a towel accessories holder. Lay a towel out flat and cut a second towel to where it is a third the size of the first towel. Sew the smaller towel piece on to the full towel, towards the very bottom. Leave the top edge of the towel piece unstitched. Now stitch horizontally down the center of the smaller towel piece.

Hang the large towel over the edge of the baby crib. Fold enough of the towel over the top railing to where it will reach, through the bars, to the backside of the towel. Align and mark where the towels meet. Stitch velcro dots into the marked positions. Now hang the towel over the railing of the crib and use the velcro dots to hold the towel onto the crib. Use the pockets that you sewed to hold baby wipes, powder, lotion and other supplies.

Use a hand towel to make a cute plant holder. Cut a piece of pliable plastic to slightly smaller than the towel. The plastic should be rather thick but easy to bend. You’ll find this type of plastic at a home improvement or craft store. Lay the plastic on the towel and fold one long end of the towel over the plastic. Do the same to the other side. Curl the plastic and towel into a tube-like shape. Gather the towel, at one end, and tie a decorative rope or ribbon around it. Do the same to the other side. This will leave a slit at the top that you can spread apart for placing several small potted plants. Put in the bathroom for a cute floral arrangement.

Lay a towel out with the long side going horizontally. Fold a 20″ ribbon in half and stitch the fold to one end of the towel. Use another towel, the same size, but cut in half, lengthways. Use seam binding across the cut portion of the towel. Align the smaller towel onto the larger towel, across the bottom, horizontally. Stitch into place, making a small tuck at the bottom, every few inches. This will allow the smaller towel to form pockets for placing objects. After you’ve stitched the two towels together, stitch rows, vertically, across the small towel. Place anything in the pockets, roll up, and tie shut with the ribbon. The carrier is great for baby needs, toys for small kids, crafts, tools, and other objects.
